The Treasurer, before again soliciting help towards the expenses of this Institution, wishes to say a few words to its friends and her friends with reference to her having hoped in the first instance that it might become self-supporting.

She finds that this hope cannot be realized, that it is impossible. And having visited and inspected other Institutions of the same kind, she finds that it is neither done nor attempted, except where there is a great demand for food, as at a fishing village at one of the Norfolk Roads, where a gentleman has built one at his own expense, and the food keeps it going: or when lodging is provided on a grand scale, as at Miss Robinson's "Sailors' Welcome," at Portsea. Neither food nor lodging are in much demand here. And with respect to the other resource for raising funds-Entertainments-the labouring class of men and boys, for whom this place is chiefly provided cannot, and in fact ought not to pay for on a scale to make them remunerative. And yet it is generally agreed that these ought to be provided for them of a wholesome kind as well as places to spend their winter evenings in without the temptation to drink. That these rooms are well filled night after night the Treasurer can herself testify from her frequent visits to them and she believes many of the confirmed drunkards of the village might have been saved from the temptation had such a place of resort been open to them when young.

:

Thanks to Miss Watson Taylor's kindness, we have now ample room for Committee Meetings without disturbing the ordinary frequenters of the place: and the rooms are found useful in so many ways for parish gatherings, that it is hoped those who take an interest in the well being of the village will continue to give it their ungrudging support.

M. A. NICHOL, TREASURER.

Church of England Temperance Society.

An Entertainment will be given in the British Workman, on Wednesday, January 2nd, at 7.30 p.m., in connection with our Temperance Society. The performers will consist entirely of a party of ladies aud gentlemen from Holton Park. All members of the Society will have free admission; non-members, admission 2d. An address will be given between the parts by Mr. Thomas French, of the Western Temperance League.

A Mission was held by Mr. James Lovell, of the Evangelization Society, in the British Workman, from Dec. 16th to 23rd inclusive. The meetings were well attended, and we trust good results of it may be permanent.

Choir Concert.

The Church Choir, assisted by a few ladies in the parish, gave us a most delightful treat on Sunday afternoon, December 23rd, by singing a Christmas Cantata entitled "The Nativity." There was a large congregation to listen to it, and the performance throughout was excellent. We append a list of the headings of the different portions of it. When the whole performance was so good, it seems invidious to make any distinctions, but the Recitative (6) given by Mr. R. Price, and the Duet (11) given by Mr. J. Adams and Miss Atherton, were specially well rendered. The Chorus (12), "O list the grand chorus we heard," was very well sung, and the words and idea specially beautiful. We are glad to think that we have so efficient a Choir, and so painstaking and successful a Choir-master in Mr. Stace, to whom very great credit is due.
