Are we about to join a Life Assurance Institution, having satisfied ourselves of its stability? But of scarcely less importance is it to inquire into its SURPLUS FUNDS or PROFITS. If the Institution have been well constituted and prudently managed, there must, in ordinary circumstances, have arisen Profits. To what amount and in what manner have these profits been divided amongst the Assured?
THE LIFE ASSOCIATION
OF SCOTLAND differs essentially from every other Scotch Assurance Office in its system of dividing the Profits. The Profits are allocated every year amongst Policy-holders of five years standing; and the share of each is handed to him in money at the payment of his next Annual Premium. Accordingly, for many years past, these Policy-holders have been required to pay only 13s. per 1. of their premiums,-the remaining 78. per 1. having been paid out of the Profits of the business.
One-half only of the Premiums for the first five years need be paid-the remaining half, if desired, remaining a permanent debt on the policy at interest.
The ASSOCIATION was founded in 1838, and empowered by special Royal Charter and Act of Parliament. The INCOME is now ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS PER ANNUM; and during last year alone 1184 Policies were issued for 551, 631. This is a larger business than any other Scotch Assurance Institution has transacted during the same period, and only very few English companies have reached it.
Copies of the last Annual Report, with Prospectus and Tables, may be had gratis at the Offices and Agencies.
