OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

66

"The author has done his work in a painstaking and earnest spirit; much that he sets forth is truly excellent; he displays the tact of an experienced teacher, and embodies a large amount of theological exposition throughout. Might become a really standard production. It has many elements of success." -Penny Post.

"There is much to be commended in this work."— The Churchman's Companion.

"Deserves much praise. The author has studied a large number of the best writers; and these 'Notes,' etc., are the result of reading, observation, and experience. While speaking well of it as a whole, we may add, that the notes and explanations to be found on pages 18, 19, 46, and 124 deserve special mention."-The School Guardian.

"The author has laid those who are interested in the catechetical instruction of the young under great obligations by his very elaborately worked-out body of Notes, Questions, and Answers.' The work bears evidence of its practical origin. The author has been a diligent reader and student in connection with this work, and every page of his book bears evidence to this in the comprehensive thoroughness of his questions, in the fulness and value of his illustrations, and in the careful accuracy of his answers."-Warrington Guardian.

"Is a very careful and useful explanation of the Catechism." -Literary Churchman.

"The outlay for the book will be a profitable investment. The notes show extensive research."-Manchester Diocesan Churchman.

“A very sensible, practical, and practicable little book."Church Times.

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

IT has been my privilege for more than twenty-six years to conduct a Public Catechetical Service in our School Chapel on Sunday afternoons. On these occasions I have endeavoured to unfold the beauties and lay open some of the treasures of religious knowledge contained in our Church Catechism. The nature of this weekly exercise has necessitated a large amount of careful preparation and note-taking; and the following pages are one of the results.

Having explained the origin and object of this little manual, I have to acknowledge my obligations to Dr. Wordsworth's Theophilus Anglicanus, his brother's Catechesis, to some personal friends for valuable hints, and to numerous writers on the Catechism, whose labours I have freely turned to my own account.

I am deeply sensible of my inability to do justice to a subject at once so great and sacred; but from experience with my own pupils I am led to hope that my labours may at least prove useful to others, especially so at a time when religious education is receiving so much attention at the hands of our Diocesan Boards.
