"The Ablest Treatise on Morals in the English Language."

AN ESSAY ON INTUITIVE MORALS, being an Attempt to Popularize Ethical Science. Part I. Theory of Morals. First American Edition, with Additions and Corrections by the Author. 12mo. Price, $1.00.

"If all essays on the same subject were as little superficial, there would not be so much rubbish of error to remove before any attempt to arrive at truth can succeed."- National Review. "This seems to us the best ethical treatise we have ever read. Some of the subsidiary propositions are open to objection, and there are a few paragraphs that express sentiments with which we cannot fully accord; but, with these inconsiderable exceptions, we have read the treatise with the highest admiration."- North American Review.

"We are glad to announce the appearance of an American edition of the Essay on Intuitive Morals.' We have already given at full length our very high estimate of the excellence of the essay, an estimate heightened by repeated perusal. We congratulate the American public that this admirable essay can now be had in a form even better than the English, and at a price which ought to insure it a wide circulation. The additions and corrections' are chiefly apparent in the notes, which are very full, and some of them of great value and interest."Examiner for May, 1859.

Description of the Companion Parlor Prints.

In describing them, we may, without impropriety, print the following extract of a letter to us from Mr. Sartain: "I have bestowed the utmost care and pains in the execution of these engravings; and the length of time employed upon them render $1,200 a moderate estimate. I should have published them as companion prints for parlor ornaments, at $5 the pair."

Filial Affection --- Going to Church --- Sunday Morning. The print bearing this title represents a scene in front of a farmer's homestead, and in the distance, viewed through the open gate, is a church; while on the road between are groups obviously tending thitherward. The party in the foreground are engaged in preparations for departure towards the same heaven-pointing spire; and a beautiful girl, of about seventeen summers, waits, Bible in hand, by the garden gate, holding it open for the egress of the family, and smiling on the infant. The mother, still handsome, attends on the aged grandfather, adjusting with affectionate care a kerchief to protect him from the cold; while he, seated upon a donkey, supports the youngest child in front of him. Three other children are occupied, one in sport with a dog, and the older ones in receiving instruction from the farmer himself, who is seated by the doorstead. An aged oak spreads its protecting arms over them all.

Home Scene - with Presents --- Returned from Market.

[ocr errors]

The market-cart has returned from the town, bearing a rich freight of purchases to the delighted young people, who are receiving them with eagerness. The farmer's wife, not yet descended, has, with one hand, passed a gay new bonnet from the open bandbox on her lap, to the miss in her teens, whose ecstasy of admiration is unmistakable; the other she extends, with a bright new rattle, to the youngest darling, who, with joy, seems ready to spring from the arms of its fondling grandmother. The old gentleman, seated in the piazza, is in the act of adjusting his spectacles for the immediate perusal of the fresh newspaper spread on his knee; while the small boy and his sister are diving into the mysteries of the basket of new crockery, and other household gear, for such ginger-nuts and other delectable condiments, which we perceive they have been made the convenience for packing. The colored boy, holding the horse's bridle, is pocketing his ginger-cake, greatly pleased; and the sturdy house-dog "bays deep-mouthed welcome." The farmer is carrying a heavy basket up the steps of the porch, in which, peeping from the folds of voluminous white linen, appears the neck and handle of a suspicious-looking, large, glazed-stone bottle; what it contains he best knows. In the shadow which it throws we see coming events, for there pussy stealthily moves down on a brood of chickens, so young as to be still very like eggs. Around are all the various concomitants of a farm. The doves coo on the eaves, the turkeys and other poultry are about, and there, too, is "the iron-bound bucket that hangs by the well," while through the open house-door we see into the comfortable and well-supplied kitchen. This mansion colonnade presents a strong resemblance to Mount Vernon, with Washington sitting on the piazza, reading the paper.

P.S.-Hon. EDWARD EVERETT. A full-length and striking portrait of this great American orator adorns the June number.

The Works of the Greatest American Novelist,

ILLUSTRATED BY THE

GREATEST AMERICAN ARTIST.

ELEGANTLY ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF

COOPER'S NOVELS. COOPER'S

WITH DRAWINGS ON STEEL AND WOOD,

BY F. O. C. DARLEY.

Engraved in the Highest Style of the Art by the most eminent Engravers in the Country.

The works of few modern writers have been so extensively translated into other languages, or so widely read in their own, as the Novels of JAMES FENIMORE COOPER; and although they have had large sales in various cheap popular styles, no complete edition, suitable for the Library, and containing all the author's revisions, has before been offered to the public.

The Publishers have the pleasure of announcing the publication of an entirely new edition of these novels, illustrated with designs on wood, and vignette drawings on steel, in Line and Etching, by F. O. C. DARLEY. This edition will contain all the latest improvements and revisions made by the author, and will be printed from clear, open type, in crown octavo, on beautiful cream-tinted and highly calendered paper, manufactured expressly for it; elegantly bound in embossed cloth, with bevelled edges, and stamped in gilt upon the side and back, with new and appropriate designs. A volume will be published monthly. Each volume will contain a novel complete, averaging about five hundred pages. Published by Subscription, at One Dollar and a Half per Volume.

[blocks in formation]

Additional value attaches to this edition from its being illustrated by DARLEY, an artist who has for years made the pages of Cooper a congenial study. In the judgment of the best critics, at home and abroad, he ranks as one of the first designers in the world. A high English authority declares that, "his plates exhibit a boldness and refinement worthy of Retsch himself," while the London Athenæum, calling upon him to illustrate the pages of Cooper, says: "We shall then enter a new region of art, as dramatic, picturesque, and vivid as any artist lover has had the pleasure of first attempting."

The entire series of steel and wood engravings in this edition, all after drawings by DARLEY, numbers nearly FIVE HUNDRED, the aggregate cost of which will exceed $ 20,000.

SIX VOLUMES,

THE PIONEERS, RED ROVER, LAST OF THE MOHICANS, THE SPY, WYANDOTTE, and THE BRAVO, are now ready and will be sent, post-paid, to any address in the United States under 3000 miles, for $1.50 each. The work may be obtained from the local agents in all the principal cities.

A Prospectus, containing pages of the letter-press, printed on a sample of the paper used in the work itself, with four of the steel engravings and specimens of the sketches on wood, a biographical sketch of MR. COOPER, bound with a sample of the cloth used on all the books, will be mailed to agents, or others, upon the receipt of ten cents.

BOOKSELLERS and others desiring to act as local agents, where none have been established, can ascertain terms, &c., by addressing the Publishers,
