NOTICE.

THIS Volume, intentionally miscellaneous for variety's sake, represents and is selected from a much larger mass of poems produced by me from time to time during some five-and-forty years. No arrangement is attempted, chronological or otherwise these are my mingled Sibyllines, old and new, lively or severe,the less likely to be wearisome to readers if not presented in too-large classes of similar character. The volume includes samples of every kind of my lyrical poetry, except the dramatic and satirical; and it is commended to the favour of many old-time friends in both hemispheres; with the hope that it may be found acceptable also to the rising generation of their children,-" virginibus pueris-que."
