FOREWORD:

The PHONO-BRETTO (Phonograph-Liberetto) is intended to render the same service to Phonograph-Owners as the Opera-Libretto renders to Opera-Goers; its object being to act as interpreter of the songs, operatic selections, addresses, recitations, etc., which have been reproduced on phonograph records of the various makes.

It will, therefore, fill a long-felt want and will, no doubt, be welcomed by all, especially by Phonograph-Owners. It will be valuable not only as a handy reference book, but as the most extensive and economical collection of such pieces ever published.

Of course, the PHONO-BRETTO is not meant to be read through like a novel, although it contains interesting and amusing reading, but the idea is to open it and follow any record, the words of which are not quite clear to you. After doing this once, every word will sound clear, and you will enjoy that particular record as you have never done before.

Although this first edition of the PHONO-BRETTO is necessarily incomplete, it contains the words of about seven hundred masterpieces of standard operas, heart songs, popular and amusing pieces (the index actually contains 1,150 items), but it is the intention of the publishers to issue supplements from time to time, or publish a new book up to date every year.

A complete collection of all the sung and spoken phonograph records is almost an impossibility, as most of them are copyrighted, and only those who have been actually engaged on the compilation of the PHONO-BRETTO have any idea of the time it takes to get in touch with the copyright proprietors, scattered all over the world, and obtain permission to reproduce.

Extreme care has been taken not to trespass on any copyrighted pieces, and without the kind permission of the copyright proprietors, whose names appear in the list herein, and the valuable assistance rendered us by the phonograph and record companies, who gave us access to their recording

laboratories, stock of records, etc., to whom we hereby tender our best thanks, we could not have attained the object we had in view.

Following each copyrighted piece will be found the name and address of the publisher or copyright-proprietor, from whom full words and music may be obtained. The catalogue numbers of the records, as well as the names of the record makers also appear.

A complete index will be found at the end of the book, the whole perfectly cross-indexed.

The buyers of the PHONO-BRETTO who will fill in and mail us the request printed herein, will receive free of charge due notice of the supplements and new editions of the PHONOBRETTO, as these may appear from time to time.
