Gubid the whole earth my grace receive;

10 preach my Gospel," saith the Lord,

Explain to them my sacred Word,

"bid them believe, obey, and live.

2"I'll make my great commission known,
"and ye shall prove my Gospel true,
"By all the works that I have done,
"and all the wonders ye shall do.
3" Go heal the sick, go raise the dead,
"go cast out devils in my name;
"Nor let my Prophets be afraid,

4

"though Greeks reproach, and Jews blaspheme.. "While thus ye follow my commands,

"I'm with you till the world shall end; "All power is trusted in my hands;

"I can destroy, and can defend."

5 He spake, and light shone round his head;
on a bright cloud to heaven he rode;
They to the farthest nations spread
the grace of their ascended God.

HYMN XXVIII.

ADVENT.

The Coming and Office of Christ. Luke iv. 18, 19. TARK! the glad sound, the Saviour comes,

1 Hthe Saviour promised long!

Let every heart prepare a throne,

and every voice a song.

2 On him the spirit, largely pour'd, exerts his sacred fire;

Wisdom and might, and zeal and love

his holy breast inspire.

3 He comes, the pris'ners to release, in Satan's bondage held,

The gates of brass before him burst, the iron fetters yield.

4 He comes, from thickest films of vice. to clear the mental ray;

And on the eyes oppress'd with night, to pour celestial day.

5 He comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure,

And with the treasures of his grace,
t' enrich the humble poor.

6 Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace,
thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heaven's eternal arches ring
with thy beloved name.

EPIPHANY.

The Blessedness of Gospel Times; or, the Revelation of Christ to Jews and Gentiles. Isa. v. 2, 7---10. Matt, xiii. 16, 17.

OW beauteous are their feet
who stand on Zion's hill;

HOME beauteous

Who bring salvation on their tongues,
and words of peace reveal!

2 How charming is their voice!
how sweet their tidings are!
"Zion, behold thy Saviour-King,
"he reigns and triumphs here."
3 How happy are our ears

that hear this joyful sound,
Which kings and prophets waited for,
and sought, but never found!

4 How blessed are our eyes
that see this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings desired it long,
but died without the sight!

5 The watchmen join their voice,
and tuneful notes employ,
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs,
and deserts learn the joy.

6 The Lord makes bare his arm through all the earth abroad! every nation now behold their Saviour and their God.

HYMN XXX.

Christ dying, rising, and reigning.

1 TTE dies! the Friend of sinners dies!

[ocr errors]

Lo! Salem's daughters weep around!

A solemn darkness veils the skies!

A sudden trembling shakes the ground!

2 Come saints, and drop a tear or two For him who groan'd beneath your load; He shed a thousand drops for you, A thousand drops of richer blood! 3 Here's love and grief beyond degree; The Lord of glory dies for men! But lo! what sudden joys we sce! Jesus, the dead, revives again! 4 The rising God forsakes the tomb! Up to his Father's court he flies; Cherubic legions guard him home, And shout him welcome to the skies! 5 Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell How high our great Deliv'rer reigns; Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell, And led the tyrant death in chains! 6 Say, "Live for ever, glorious King, "Born to redeem, instruct and save!" Then ask---" O death, where is thy sting! "And where thy victory, O grave!"

HYMN XXXI.

ASCENSION.

Christ's Ascension. Psalm xxiv. 7.

UR Lord is risen from the dead,

10 Our Jesus is gone up on high;

The powers of hell are captive led, Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 There his triumphal chariot waits, And angels chant the solemn lay; "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! "Ye everlasting doors, give way!" 3 Loose all your bars of massy light, And wide unfold the radiant scene; He claims those mansions as his right, Receive the King of Glory in.

4" Who is the King of Glory, who?”
The Lord that all his foes o'ercame,
The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew,
And Jesus is the conqueror's name.

5 Lo! his triumphant chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay,
"Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
"Ye everlasting doors, give way!"
6 "Who is the King of Glory, who?"
The Lord of boundless power possest,
The King of saints and angels too,
God over all, for ever blest!

HYMN XXXII.
PENITENTIAL.

The Penitent's Supplication.

THOU that hear'st when sinners cry,
Though all my crimes before thee lie,
Behold them not with angry look,
But blot their mem'ry from thy book.
2 Create my nature pure within,
And form my soul averse to sin :
Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart,
Nor hide thy presence from my heart.
3 I cannot live without thy light,
Cast out and banish'd from thy sight:
Thine holy joys, my God, restore,
And guard me that I fall no more.
4 Though I have griev'd thy Spirit, Lord,
Thy help and comfort still afford;
And let a wretch come near thy throne,
To plead the merits of thy Son.
5 A broken heart, my God, my King,
Is all the sacrifice I bring;

The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

6 My soul lies humbled in the dust,
And owns thy dreadful sentence just;
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemn'd to die.
7 Then will I teach the world thy ways;
Sinners shall learn thy sov'reign grace;
I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood,
And they shall praise a pard'ning God.
8 O may thy love inspire my tongue,
Salvation shall be all my song;
And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord, my strength and righteousness.
HYMN XXXIII.

[blocks in formation]

4 Almighty grace, thy healing power, how glorious, how divine!

That can to life and bliss restore so vile a heart as mine.

5 Thy pard'ning love, so free, .so sweet, dear Saviour, I adore;

1

O keep me at thy sacred feet, and let me rove no more.

HOW

HYMN XXXIV.

PENITENTIAL.

The Pool of Bethesda. John v. 2---4. TOW long, thou faithful God, shall I Here in thy ways forgotten lie? When shall the means of healing be The channels of thy grace to me? 2 Sinners on every side step in, And wash away their pain and sin; But I, an helpless sin-sick soul, Still lie expiring at the pool.

3 Thou cov❜nant-angel, swift come down, To-day thine own appointments crown; Thy power into the means infuse, And give them now their sacred use. 4 Thou seest me lying at the pool,

I would, thou know'st I would be whole; O let the troubled waters move,

And minister thy healing love.

HYMN XXXV.

PENITENTIAL.

THAT my load of sin were gone!

O that I could at last submit,

At Jesus' feet to lay it down! to lay my soul at Jesus' feet!

2 Rest for my soul I long to find:

Saviour of all, if mine thou art, Give me thy meek and lowly mind, and stamp thine image on my heart. 3 Break off the yoke of inbred sin, and fully set my spirit free; I cannot rest, till pure within, till I am wholly lost in thee.

4 Fain would I learn of thee, my God; thy light and easy burden prove,

The cross, all stain'd with hallow'd blood, the labour of thy dying love.

5 I would; but thou must give the power; my heart from every sin release; Bring near, bring near the joyful hour, and fill me with thy perfect peace.
