An Order in Council appeared in the London Gazette in October, 1838, declaring that the Sees of St. Asaph and Bangor shall be united on the next vacancy in either; and that, on that event occurring, the Bishopric of Manchester shall be immediately created within the archiepiscopal see of York, and that the county of Lancaster shall form the see of the new Bishop, being for that purpose detached from the diocese of Chester.
