VAIN shadowy world! what mortal e'er hath trod

With pilgrim footsteps life's eventful road,
Nor turn'd in sadness from the scene beneath,
Where all is change, uncertainty, and death,
To seek some surer, happier point of rest,
Some home and haven for the wearied breast?
Was it for this the heart's keen feelings given,

And mind enkindled as with fire from heaven,
To wander, in the restless range of thought,

O'er a vain world which satisfieth not;
To feel the aching void, the silent grief,
The agony of soul that mocks relief;

And bear the pelting of the storms of fate,
An orphan homeless, friendless, desolate?
Oh! blest be He who bright to mortal eyes
Bade the fair fabric of Creation rise,
