INDIANAPOLIS, IND., June 5, 1888.

The Fifty-first Annual Convention of the Church in the Diocese of Indiana assembled in Christ Church, and, after evening prayer, said by the Revs. Walter Scott, N. W. Heermans and A. George E. Jenner, the Bishop read his fifth annual address, as follows:

Dear Brethren in Christ:

We are met in solemn assembly in God's House, to review the work of our beloved Diocese for another year, and to devise plans for the furthering of the great interests entrusted to our keeping. We commemorate also at this time the fiftieth anniversary of the organization of our Diocese. Bishop Kemper, of blessed memory, on his arrival here as a Missionary Bishop, in 1835, found an immense territory containing a half million of souls, and rapidly filling up by emigration. It had been left to grow up entirely without spiritual care from our Church. He found many sons of the Church who had been long waiting and who were glad to welcome him as the representative of the Church of their love. The few missionaries he was able to secure found a hard but promising field of work and laid some good foundations.

The jurisdiction of the good Bishop included Missouri, Indiana and the whole Northwest Territory, from which in these fifty years have been organized the Dioceses of Indiana, Missouri, Milwaukee, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Fond du Lac, Nebraska and Colorado, with the missionary jurisdictions of North and South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

Fifty years ago, it was indeed the day of small things in Indiana, of travel by steamboat, canal, mud wagon, and stage coach, over corduroy and mud roads, and we can easily imagine the toil and
