humble in spirit." "The Lord rejecteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."

An unceasing application to study marked the character of our dear Mary. Added to a natural thirst for the acquirement of knowledge, religion furnished her with a still stronger motive to its pursuit ; and, from holy principle, she sought to improve those talents which she had laid at the foot of the cross. It would be well for the church, if all professing Christians held mental culture in the high estimation that it deserves; thus would men eminent for mere worldly wisdom be the more easily induced to seek "the wisdom that cometh from above," and the religion of Jesus would be magnified in the eyes of the world.

We might dwell on Mary's strong faith in God; on her meek resignation to his holy will; on her patience under the sufferings she received from his hand; on her anxiety for the salvation of others; on her warm and affectionate heart; and above all, on her ardent desire that in her the Divine glory might be promoted, whether living or dying; but lengthened remarks are needless on what has been already adduced. Her holy and consistent example has left to those who knew and loved her, a rich feast of meditation, when their silent thoughts seek wherewith to strengthen faith and add new wings to praise.

And now, beloved friend and sister, farewell! We have traced the steps of thine earthly pilgrimage. We have watched in thee the progress of grace the seed to the ear, and till it was ripe for the heavenly

from

garner. We have seen how thy Master led thee through the wilderness; that He " caused thee to pass under the rod, and brought thee into the bond of the covenant;" that, when weary, he sustained thee; that, when suffering, he gave thee patience; and that, when dying, he was thine all-sufficient Saviour. We have seen thee at the gate of heaven with glory in thine eye, but our weak footsteps can no longer attend thee; for we are still chained to our mortality, and we cannot yet soar where thou art. But we are assured that thou art happy, and, through the alone merits of the Redeemer, we trust ere long to join thee in bliss that shall never fade!

And thou, O Lord Jesus, who hast gathered to thy side another of the lambs of thine earthly pasture, give to us the like peace in our departing moments; grant us faith and hope, that we may behold with a steady eye our home in heaven, and rejoice, “with joy unspeakable," in the anticipation of the final and glorious results of thine eternal love! Amen, and Amen!

JACKSON AND WALFORD,

WORKS BY THE REV. J. PYE SMITH, D.D., LL.D.

THE SCRIPTURE TESTIMONY to the MESSIAH; an Inquiry with a View to a Satisfactory Determination of the Doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures concerning the Person of Christ. The third Edition, much improved, and enlarged by a considerable increase of new matter. 3 vols. 8vo, 36s. boards.

"The late learned Bishop of Oxford (Dr. Lloyd) stated, that he considered it to be the ablest treatise extant on the subject."-Christian Remembrancer.

"Unquestionably the most elaborate defence and proof of the Deity of Jesus Christ extant in our own language."-Horne's Introduction to the Study of the Bible.

"Replete with the proofs of extensive reading, of great critical learning, of sound and effective criticism, and of pure and enlightened piety; it is altogether a most elaborate production, and has deservedly received the suffrages which assign to it a place among the standard works of Theological Literature."-Eclectic Review.

"The Author would especially thus recommend an attentive perusal of the admirable Treatise of Dr. Pye Smith on the Scripture Testimony to the Messiah; and this he the more readily does, from the circumstance that that Writer, though agreeing in every essential of doctrine, is yet in discipline unconnected with the Establishment, and may therefore by many be considered to exercise a freer and more unbiassed judgment."- Rev. W. D. Conybeare, in his Preface to the Second Edition of his Theological Lectures.

Dr. Smith's Scripture Testimony is also included in the List of Works recommended to the Students in Divinity, by the Bishops of London and Oxford, Professor Burton, &c. &c.

THE PROTESTANT DISSENT FURTHER VINDICATED, on the grounds of Holy Scripture, the Moral Obligations of Men, and the Liberties of Britons: in a REJOINDER to the Rev. SAMUEL LEE, D.D., &c. &c., upon that Gentleman's Second Letter to the Author, repeating his former Charges. In 8vo, 2s. 6d. sewed.
