REVIEWS

OF

HUNT & CO.'S DIRECTORIES.

Windsor and Eton Express, Dec. 27th, 1845.

[ocr errors]

"WINDSOR DIRECTORY.-Mr. Hunt has just published a neat volume, under the title of Hunt's Royal Windsor Directory.' We can with confidence recommend the work to the inhabitants of Windsor, and also those of the neighbouring towns, &c. The plan of the work is excellent, for added to accurate lists of the persons resident in Windsor, Eton, Slough, Maidenhead, Burnham, Egham, Staines, Taplow, &c., we have short historical and statistical accounts of each place, which are exceedingly interesting; nor do the book's attractive features stop here—the exhibitions in and about the metropolis being given. Great credit is due to Mr. Hunt for his spirit in bringing out such a work, which is neatly got up, and includes everything which is necessary for a work of this kind. The trouble must have been very great, and the expense far from inconsiderable, but we trust that he will receive more than an equivalent, in the extended circulation of the work."

Oxford Chronicle and Berks and Bucks Gazette,
Aug. 15, 1846.

"CITY OF OXFord, &c. DirecTORY.-This work, published by Hunt & Co., is now passing through the press, and on examination we find it contains short but interesting historical and statistical accounts of the city of Oxford, and the towns of Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Deddington, Thame, Witney, and Woodstock, followed by copious ar.d accurate lists of the private, professional, and commercial residents therein, and also comprehensive lists of the residents for several miles around each town (which is quite a new feature), and although it contains so multifarious and various a mass of information, it is truly what the publishers professed it should be a book of easy reference,' embracing that commercial and useful information which must hitherto have been sought for in various directions at the cost of much time and trouble, whereas it is here concentrated in a

clear and correct manner, and from the excellent arrangement and classifications adopted, easily to be found. The work, which contains several hundred names never noticed in former directories, is got up in a style which cannot fail of gaining for it universal commendation."

Jackson's Oxford Journal, Aug. 22, 1846.

"HUNT & Co.'s DIRECTORY FOR Oxford, &c.-The enterprising publishers, Messrs. Hunt & Co., who have obtained some distinction by their excellent Directories of Windsor and other places, have just completed what has been so much desired for many years, namely, a correct and comprehensive Directory of Oxford, its neighbourhood, and the most important towns adjacent, such as Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Deddington, Thame, and Witney. The present work not only embraces lists of the clergy, professions, and trades, but extends also to the suburbs, and gives such a mass of local information relating to each place as cannot fail to make it popular, not only to persons engaged in business, to whom it will be invaluable, but to all who wish to possess themselves of every possible information concerning their locality. The street key, as well as the list of carriers in each district, will be found extremely useful; in fact, the work will be equally indispensable to the counting-house, and private and public library."

Banbury Guardian, Sept. 17, 1846.

"HUNT & Co.'s Oxford, Banbury, &c. DIRECTORY.-This Directory, which has been some little time in preparation, has at length been issued, and will, we think, satisfy the anticipations of those who have taken an interest therein. It bears marks of more care than is usual in the preparation of similar publications; the few errors that we see being of very trivial importance, and less in number than we have ever before noticed in such a compilation. We have no doubt the work will be liberally patronized, as it will be a general convenience as a book of reference to those engaged in trade, and a source of amusement to others. The Guide to the Sights of London, which is appended, will be found of use to Country Cousins."

B. W. GARDINER, Printer, 20, Princes Street, Cavendish Square.
