discipline: it has lately been enlarged by an additional wing, and is considered a perfect model of its kind. The CITY GAOL, in Southgate Street, erected in 1782, not being on a scale sufficiently large for the number of prisoners, was subsequently enlarged and improved, and a chapel added. Under the Poor Law Amendment Act Gloucester was formed into a Union; it comprises 37 parishes, embracing an area of 48 square miles; and a population in 1831 of 22,208. The Union House, erected by order of the Poor Law Commissioners, is a handsome brick building, situate near the Railway stations. About a quarter of a mile north from the city is Kingsholm, a place of considerable importance to the antiquarian and historian; here have been discovered stone coffins, more than 1000 skeletons, urns filled with ashes, spears, daggers, and ancient military weapons, gold rings, Roman steelyards or balances, and vast quantities of gold, silver, and copper coins, particularly of Tiberius, Claudius, Nero, and the early Roman Emperors; bones of elephants of a prodigious size (one measuring 22 inches in circumference) have also been found several feet below the surface of the earth, which in all probability must have been deposited there nearly 1400 years, as the Romans finally departed from Britain in 448. Dion informs us that Claudius brought elephants into Britain A.D. 43.
