TAXES IMPOSED, REPEALED, OR RADUCED.-In 1862 the excise duty on hops was repealed, estimated at 250,000l:, and the customs duty, estimated at 98,671.; and certain stamps were reduced to the amount of 5,000l. Brewers' licences were increased to the estimated amount of 230,000l.; victuallers' licences and the duty on chicory by 2,0col.; and stamps, various, increased or imposed, to the amount of 20,500l. The taxes removed amounting to 353,671l.; and those added to 252,500l. 11. NATIONAL DEBT.-On March 31, 1862, the national debt amounted to 800,770,2381., of which 784,252,3381. were funded, and 16,517,900l. unfunded. On March 31, 1863, the funded debt was 783,306,739., the unfunded 16,495,450l., and the total 799,802,1397. 12. LOCAL TAXATION.-The annual account of the county rates of England and Wales shows that in 1862 they were assessed on 73,975,962l. This amount increases year by year; four years before it was but 65,207,2861. The sum of 1,322,1561. was raised by county and police rates in the year ending at Michaelmas last; the Treasury allowance was 239,4727.; other receipts amounted to 276,2751. The expenditure on rural police was 573,1747.; on gaols, 341,052l.; on prosecutions, 130,709l.; on conveyance of prisoners and transports, 21,5941; on shire halls, &c., 20,8057.; on lunatic asylums (including building), 107,6637.; on the maintenance of pauper lunatics, 35,567%.; on county bridges, 54,6417.; clerks of the peace, 45,6541.; coroners, 55,6437.; inspectors of weights, &c., 9,8391.
