THE REVENUE.-AN ABSTRACT of the GROSS PRODUCE of the REVENUE of the UNITED KINGDOM, in the under-mentioned periods, ended September 30, 1863, compared with the corresponding periods of the preceding Year. REVENUE, IRELAND.-In 1862 the net revenue of Ireland, paid into the exchequer, amounted to 7,856,1571.; arising from balance in the exchequer at the beginning of the year, 1,181,510l., customs 2,274,000l., excise 2,758,000l., stamps 573,040l., income tax 672,780l. (a decrease of 60,7057. from 1861), post-office nothing, small branches of revenue and miscellaneous receipts, repayment of advances, 15,152., imprest and other monies, 382,1861. The expenditure, chiefly for interest on funded debt, grants, &c., was 6,736,2821., and 1,120,3861. remained in the exchequer. 5. CORNWALL, DUCHY OF.-The revenue of the Duchy of Cornwall for the year ending Dec. 31, 1862, was 80,8061., 23,801l. of which consisted of the balance in hand; 39,1657. arose from the profits of courts, royalties of coal-mines, mines, quarries, sale of wood, &c.; 16,2177. from the Consolidated Fund in lieu of tin coinage duties, &c.; and 7,592l. from dividends and interest on stock. The expenditure was 80,33 21., of which 52,130l. were paid to the treasurer of the Prince of Wales, 2,6571. in superannuations, charities, law charges, &c., 7,5831. for expenses of management, 13,500l. for investments and outlay for the benefit of the estate, 4,4621. for property tax allowed to tenants, for annuities, &c., and the balance 6,474l. remains in hands of bankers or agents. During the year The drawbacks and allowances on quantities over-entered, damaged, &c., was Net Produce, not deduct. ing charge for collecting £23,709,505 estates and land, to the amount of 148,4837. had been sold, the chief item being the manor of Great Berkhampstead to the trustees of Lord Brownlow for 144,540l.; and other estates and parcels of land purchased to the amount of 151,737, of which the chief were the manors of Rialton and Reterth in Dorsetshire for 97,920l., and the manor of The Brewers, in Somerset, for 27,600l. 6. DUCHY OF LANCASTER.-The receipts in the year 1862 were 55,6827., arising from rents and profits of courts, royalties, &c. Of the disbursements, 22,000l. were paid over to the Queen's use, 5,991l. in salaries, &c., 1,8017. in charities and donations, and 19,8021. were in hand. The remainder is made up by miscellaneous items. 7. INCOME TAX. In the year ending April 5, 1862, the net amount of income tax, which was then 9d., in the pound, was as follows:— England. Scotland. In Ireland the income charged under schedule D. rose from 4,604,2571. to 4.677,5681.; but the number of persons charged fell from 17.721 to 17,602. In Great Britain in the year 1861-62 135,262 rersons were charged under schedule D on incomes between 100l. and 150l. and 67 on incomes of 50,0ool, and upwards; in Ireland 8,304 on incomes between 100l. and 150!. and two on incomes of 50,000l. and upwards. The annual value on which the tax was chargeable was 298,304,9871.; of which 55,005,170l. consisted of lands, tithes, manors, &c.; 57,761,7451. of house property; 5,515,6991. of mines and iron-works; 19,908.4731. of gas, railway and canal property; 16,554,930l. of farming property; 8. ACCOUNT of the TOTAL INCOME of the REVENUE of INDIA and of th PUBLIC EXPENDITURE in the Year ended April 30, 1862. The estimated revenue for the year ended April 30, 1863, was 45,105,700l.; and the estimated expenditure 43,825,104l. The receipts of the Home Treasury of the Government of India for the same period were 18,924,019l., including 2,653,0637. balance in hand, the principal items of which consisted of 4.995,387. India stock and bonds sold; of 8,615,1594. instalments of capital from railway, canal, and irrigation companies; 1,011,6661. repayment of advances; and 130,537, the proceeds of the sale of the old East India House, the Military College at Addiscombe, and Haileybury College, with some minor items, make up the remainder. The disbursements consist of the interest on loans and stock, 2,056,0551.; bonds and debentures paid off, 1,301,600l.; military Guaranteed Interest on the Capi- 1,425,080 £43,880,100 charges, 2,517,9087.; guaranteed interest on the capital of railway and other companies, 1,785,6631.; and for stores, &c., 1,612,608%; the bullion shipped to India amounted to 735,005l.; minor items, with 5,733,7114. balance in hand, make up the remainder. 9. HOUSE DUTY.-The house duty in Eng land and Wales was levied in the financial year ending April 5, 1862, on 519,991 houses, and amounted to 813,3831. This tax is only levied on houses rated above 20l. per annum. Of the houses charged, 205,528 were under 30l.; only 13 were above 3,000l. The 13 were all in Middlesex; one was charged at the value of 20,000l. a year. The number of inhabited houses at the census of 1861 was 3,745,463. |
