Excerpt from Forms of English Poetry

Though technical terms have been avoided as far as possible in this book, a short vocabulary of the words of this character not referred to in the index may prove helpful to the understanding of other books, in which the student may encounter them.

Accent. Pronouncing a syllable with more force - slightly louder, and allowing slightly more time to the vowel sound than is given to an unaccented syllable.

Alliteration. Identity of consonant sounds, usually but wrongly restricted to the Opening consonants of two words. It may refer to the similarity between the consonant sounds of syllables.

Anacrusis. An unemphatic syllable preceding the regular rhythm of the verse. Frequently this syllable seems to belong to the final foot of the preceding line. See p. 36.
