HE Wise Man hath said: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." "Surely the Press is nothing but an extension of speech, an auxiliary to the tongue, and an educator of the people.

"A single drop of ink

May make a million think."

And in this day of ephemeral literature, when periodicals of every kind abound, it is a cause of thankfulness to know that the Religious Tract Society has faithfully endeavoured to send forth wholesome, manly, and Christian volumes. To stem the evils of pernicious literature, and to be an advocate of truth, is sometimes a thankless undertaking; but the high and continued estimation in which the labours of this Society are held by the religious public, is a cause for gratitude to God, and a ground for congratulation to the Committee who so ably conduct its affairs.

The varied books which they send forth to their legion-readers are like rays of light, concentrating their sacred force into one

focus-issuing indeed from separate authors, but all aiming steadily at Truth and Purity. And the Editor hopes that this Volume may carry pleasure and profit wherever it is read.

The demand for a Third Series of Readings, adapted for Winter Gatherings, is a practical proof of the usefulness of the former volumes. To comply with the demand has been a pleasant labour to the EDITOR. And he earnestly hopes that the wide circulation of this volume may shed fresh lustre on the time-honoured Society from which it issues, and tend, in its humble place, to the glory of God.
