5. The old Rugbæan match was played next, in very bad weather, both Pickard and Walker's stopping was unexceptionable, and on the old Rugbæan side, Bingham and Sawyer in the first, and Hollway and Townsend in the second innings, made some beautiful hits. Sandford, Clifford, Clement and Scott, also played well. Dr. Goulburn gave a whole holiday on the Wednesday, for this match, which in spite of the rain was a very good one. Elmhirst, Gosling, and Clifford made three very good catches. This was, as usual, one of the best matches, but the bowling was poor on both sides : Pickard and Gosling played well for the School, and Graham, in the second innings gave as beautiful a display of Cricket as was ever seen in the close, and at last won the match—his play throughout was splendid-Hodgson also in the first innings, and Scott in the second, played remarkably well. On the 18th of May, the Leicester County Club brought down an Eleven, which was not however the least able to cope with the School; Sandford played well, and Scott made some splendid hits; Gosling at point again made a beautiful catch, and Mr. Raven fielded leg and cover point beautifully on the other side-Mr. Hoskyns and Pickard both stopped without letting a bye. |
