8 Nevertheless, Jehovah delivered them for his name's sake, that he might make known his mighty power:

9 He rebuked the red-sea also, and dried it up; he caused them to walk through the deep, as through a desert:

10 He delivered them from the power of the adversaries; and rescued them from the hand of the enemy.

11 But the waters overwhelmed their encmics; not one of them survived.

12 Then they believed in his word; and sang his praise.

13 They soon, however, forgat his works and did not wait his counsel:

14 But followed their lufts in the wilderness; and tried the patience of GOD in the desert.

15 And he gave them their desire, and sent loathing to their appetite.

16 They were envious of Moses in the camp; and of Aaron, the servant of JEHOVAH. 17 Then the earth opened, and swallowed up Dathan; and overwhelmed the company of Abiram:

18 A fire was kindled in their assembly; and a flame burned up the wicked.

19 They

19 They made a calf in Horeb; and worshipped the molten image:

20 They exchanged their glory for the semblance of an ox that eateth grass.

21 They forgat GOD their saviour, who had done great things in Egypt;

22 Wonderful things in the land of Ham; and terrible things at the red-sea.

23 Therefore, he declared he would have utterly destroyed them, had not Moses, his chosen, stood in the breach before him, to turn his indignation from destroying them.

24 They despised the land they should have desired; they believed not in his word: 25 But murmured in their tents; and hearkened not unto the voice of JEHOVAH :

26 Therefore, he sware unto them, that he would make them fall in the wilderness :

27 And that he would disperse their posterity among the nations, and scatter them through the countries.

28 They connected themselves with Baal-peor; and did eat of the offerings made to dead men deified.

29 They provoked GOD with their impieties; so that the plague broke out among them:

30 But Phineas stood forth, and executed justice; and the plague was stayed. 31 And that was accounted to him for righteousness, through all generations for

ever.

32 They provoked God at the waters at Meribah; where Moses suffered for their sakes:

33 For they vexed his spirit, so that he spake rashly with his lips.

34 They destroyed not the peoples, whom JEHOVAH had commanded them to destroy:

35 But mingled themselves with the nations, and learned their doings:

36 Insomuch, that, they worshipped their idols, which became a snare unto them: nay; they sacrificed their sons and their daughters, to dæmons.

37 They shed innocent blood: the blood of their sons and their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood.

38 They defiled themselves with their works; and they committed fornication. by their deeds.

39 Therefore the anger of JEHOVAH

burnt

burnt furiously against this people; and he held his inheritance in abomination :

40 He delivered them into the hands of the nations; so that those who hated them did rule over them:

41 And their enemies oppressed them, while they were humbled under their hand. 42 Many times he delivered them, but they rebelled against him, and were brought low by their wickedness.

43 Nevertheless, when he heard them cry, he regarded them in their distress.

44 He remembered his covenant in their favour; and changed his purpose according to the greatness of his mercy :

45 Yea, he made them to appear deserving of compassion, in the sight of all those, who led them away captive.

46 Deliver us, O JEHOVAH! our GOD, and gather us from among the nations ; that we may celebrate thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.

47 Praised be JEHOVAH, the GOD of Israel, from the beginning of time to the end thereof: and let all the people say, Amen.

PSALM

PSALM CVII.

O GIVE thanks unto JEHOVAR, for he is good and his mercy endureth for ever.

2 Let those give thanks whom JEHOVAH hath delivered: especially those whom he hath delivered from the hand of the enemy:

3 Whom he hath gathered from the countries; from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

4 They who wandered in the wilderness and in the desert, and found no city. in which they could dwell:

5 Who were hungry and thirsty, and whose soul fainted within them:

6 When these cried unto JEHOVAH in their tribulation; he delivered them from their distress:

7 He guided them in the direct way; and conducted them to a city, wherein they should dwell.

8 Let these, therefore, praise JEHOVAH for his mercy; and for the wonderful things which he hath done for the children of men ;

9 For he hath satisfied the thirsty soul;
