first born, supreme over the kings of the earth.

28 "I will preserve my mercy towards him for ever, and my covenant with him shall be unchangeable:

29

"That I may establish his posterity for evermore, and his throne as the days of heaven.

30 "But, if his sons forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;

31 "If they break my statutes, and do not observe my commandments;

32" will visit their transgressions with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

33 "Nevertheless, I will not entirely withdraw my mercy from him; neither will I suffer my truth to fail.

34" I will not break my covenant with him, nor will I reverse what hath issued 'from my lips :

35" For this one thing I have sworn by my holiness, That I will not deceive David.'

36 "His posterity shall endure for ever; and his throne shall be like the sun before

me;

established

established for ever; and like the heavens it shall be durably fixed."

38 Yet thou hast rejected, thou art disgusted at, thou art angry with thine anointed.

39 Thou hast made void the covenant with thy servant, and profaned his crown by casting it upon the ground:

40 Thou hast broken down all his defences; thou hast laid his fortresses in ruins :

41 All who pass along despoil him; he is become a subject of reproach to his neighbours.

42 Thou hast exalted the right-hand of his enemies; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice:

43 Thou hast blunted the edge of his sword; and hast not supported him in battle.

44 Thou hast put an end to his glory, and cast down his throne to the ground. 45 Thou hast shortened the days of his youth, and clothed him with dishonour.

46 How long, O JEHOVAH! wilt thou hide thyself? shall thy wrath burn like fire for ever?

47 Remember how transitory I am; and how vain thou hast created all the sons of men!

48 What man shall live, and not see death; and shall rescue his life from the power of the grave?

49 Where are thy former mercies, o JEHOVAH! which thou didst promise unto David with an oath ?

50 Reinember, O JEHOVAH! the reproach cast upon thy servant, and that I bear in my bosom all the invectives of many peoples;

5 With which thine enemies, o JEHOVAH! reproach the foot-steps of thine anointed. Praised be JEHOVAH for ever! Amen, and Amen.

PSALM XC.

JEHOVAH! thou hast been our refuge, from one generation to another.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth. and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art GOD.

3 Thou turnest mortal man to destruction

[blocks in formation]

when thou sayest, "Return to dust, ye sons of men :'

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday, when they are past; or as a watch of the night.

5 Thou refreshest them with sleep; and, in the morning, they are like the springing

grass:

6 Which is green and flourishing; but, before the evening, is cut down, and withered.

7 So are we consumed by thy displeasure; and carried off by thine indignation.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, and our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

9 All our days are passed away through thine anger; we bring our years to an end, like, as it were, a tale that is told.

10 The days of our age are three-score and ten years; and if by reason of our strength we come to four-score years, yet their increase is but labour and sorrow: for we are soon cut off, and sink into the grave.

11 Yet, who regardeth the vehemence

of

of thine anger; or the terribleness of thy displeasure?

12 Teach us to number our days aright and we shall bring our hearts unto wisdom.

13 Return unto us, O JEHOVAH! at the last, and be gracious unto thy servants;

14 O satisfy us speedily with thy mercy; so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.

15 Comfort us according to the days thou hast afflicted us, and according to the years we have suffered adversity.

16 Show thy work unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children:

17 And let the glorious countenance of JEHOVAH OUR GOD be upon us; o prosper thou the work of our hands!

PSALM XCI.

O THOU who dwellest under the protec tion of the most high! thou mayest securely repose thyself under the shadow of the almighty.

2 Thou mayest say unto JEHOVAH; "Thou art my refuge, and my fortress; my GOD! in whom I place my trust."
