The Works of Pope; with a Memoir of the Author, Notes and Critical Notices on each Poem. By the Rev. G. Croly, LL. D. Vol. III. A. J. Valpy, M.A., London.

The getting up of this edition of Pope is most finished and elegant. The popularity of the "Poet of Morals" is unfading, because he appeals to sympathies and principles which are universal and unchanging; and therefore it is, that every effort made to diffuse his writings deserves well of the public. We are, ourselves, greatly delighted to witness a return to the works of our Standard Authors, both in prose and verse: it is a proof to us that a more healthy taste is growing up in our Literature, and that we have touched the lowest point of degradation. No writer is better fitted to aid this improvement in public taste than the one before us: his smooth and harmonious versification, his polished style, and the exquisite finish he bestowed upon all his works, have made him the model of all subsequent authors, or rather, we should say, ought to have done so. Men who fling their thoughts carelessly together in rhyme, may be poets in heart; but unless aided by very superior genius, they will fail to become poets for the public. The loose texture of modern verse, its multitude of rythmical errors, has deprived a great portion of it, even of the praise, such as it is, of being rhymed prose, or rhymed nonsense.

Dr. Croly, who edits the work, is himself a poet of no ordinary pretensions, and a finished critical scholar. His annotations are, therefore, valuable, and he has displayed considerable judgment and acuteness in his department. The illustrations to the third volume are a finely drawn pastoral scene, by Witherington, forming the vignette; and the frontispiece is an embodying of the image contained in the lines of the Fourth Pastoral, beginning,

"Ye weeping loves, the stream with myrtles hide," &c.

The work altogether is most attractive, and deserves a place beside the editions of Cowper, Johnson, and Byron.

Ofelia; or, The Child of Fate. By Dona Francisca Pazos. 2 vols. Thomas Hurst, Loudon.

Here are two volumes, breathing the impassioned feelings of a Lusitanian woman-one highly endowed with her sex's universal prerogative, quick discrimination of character, except when blinded by love. The growth of attachment, between the heroine and Candid, is well told; and the sketches of Anglo-Spanish society have some touches of vraisemblance in them. The chief interest of the story, however, turns upon Ofelia, whom the Authoress paints as a woman of a much higher morale than we believe to be common in le beau sexe-that is, we believe her conceptions are rarely so sublimated, and so purely intellectual, as she is here described. Passion, however, is well and naturally drawn. Her marriage with Tupac, a Peruvian, whilst her heart was full of vivid recollections of Candid, and the emotions to which this grafting of a second love upon a first gave rise to, reminds us of a homely English proverb,

"Always be off with the old love,

Before you are on with the new."

The struggle between reason and passion in the last chapter, when Ofelia is left by her husband in the protection of Candid, most imprudently and cruelly we think, is forcibly depicted; and, fortunately, accident saves the bewildered victim.

The imperfections of this work are many. Its idiom is foreign, and its style consequently turgid and stiff; and its sentiments, though pure and generous, are in many of their bearings decidedly un-English.

INDEX TO BOOKS REVIEWED

IN THE LITERARY PERIODICALS DURING THE MONTH OF JULY. A register of this kind has long been a desideratum with Authors, as few of them have opportunities for seeing the different literary papers and Magazines. Here we hope to relieve them from a dilemma-and the Index will also become a valuable and unique source of reference to libraries and the public at large, enabling book-buyers to seek out at once for a critical notice of every new work.
