On Occasion of any violent Storm or Tempeft.
MOST o great and glorious Lord our God, Thou art
cloathed with almighty Power, and girdeft thyself with irresistible Strength; with Thee there is terrible Majefty; thy Way is in the Whirlwind, and in the Storm, and the Clouds are the Dust of thy Feet ; Thou commandeft the Winds and the Seas, and they obey Thee; the Mountains fake at thy Presence, the Rocks tremble before Thee, yea, the Earth, and all that dwell therein: We, poor feeble Duft and Ashes, whom Thou canst scatter with the Breath of thy Mouth, desire with the deepest Humility, and in a most adoring Sense
of thy Greatness, to throw ourselves at the Footstool of thy Throne; poffefs our Hearts, O God, with an holy Fear and Reverence of Thee, may we stand in Awe of thy Judgements; and by these awakening Calls of thy Providence, which are given us in the raging Tempests we feel, [or have felt, ] teach us to consider our Ways, to bewail, our past Offences, and to renew our Purposes of Repentance and Amendment of Life.
Abate the stormy Winds, and compofe the troubled Waves of the Sea, that Those that are thereon may be safe under thy powerful Protection, and that thy Servants every where may be defended from the Dangers which threaten them. Give us Grace, We befeech Thee, to become wifer and better by the Rebukes of thy Rod, and amidst all the Changes and Commotions of this World, grant that by a patient Continuance in well-doing, our Hearts may be so fixed, trusting in the Lord, that We may never be afraid of any Evil; but with holy and unínaken Confidence be looking for thy Mercy unto eternal Life, in that City, of which Thou, o God, art the Builder and Maker, the Foundations whereof never shall be shaken. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for thy Goodness-Sake in Christ Jesus our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.
g On Occasion of an Earthquake.
LORD our God, We desire with the 'utmost Reve
rence to prostrate our Souls before Thee, confefling that Tnou art a great God, mighty and terrible; Thou remaveit the Mountains, and overturnelt them in thine An.
Thou shakeft the Earth out of her Place, and makeit the Pillars thereof to tremble. We beseech Thee, O Lord, to awaken our Attention, duly to consider and hear the Voice of thy amazing Judgements, and to learn the Instructions they have a tendency to convey : may We every one of us examine our own Hearts, fee where we have done Iniquity, and sincerely resolve to do so no mote: Suffer us not, as soon as our present Confternation is over, to forget our Deliverances or to grow vain and presumptuous, lest a worse Thing should befall us. We acknowledge it is of thy Goodness, O God, that we were not utterly confumed, and that we were not swallowed up quick, by the late dreadful Earthquake. O may a Sense of thy many wonderful Preservations of us continually abide upon our Hearts, and produce such a godly Care and Watchfulness in our Conduct, that no Disaster in Life may ever surprize us ; that Death itself, at what time and in what manner soever it cometh, may not find us unprepared ; and that at length We may fafely arrive at that Kingdom, which can never be moved ; for the Sake of thy Mercy in Christ Jesus, our worthy Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.
In the Time of War and Tumulis.
ALMIGHTY God, King of all Kings, and Go
vernor of all Things, whose Power no Creature is able to resist, to whom it belongeth justly to punish Sinners, and to be merciful to them that truly repent; fave and deliver Us, We beseech Thee, from the Flands of our Enemies; let not this our Country be ever subject to Tribute, or given up to Strangers; and let not them that hate us prevail against us, or obtain the Rule over us: abate, o
Lord, their : Pride, asswage their Malice, disappoint all their Councils, and make their Devices against us of none effect, and may all
all their Schemes and Enterprizes be as the untimely Birth, of as Grass upon the House-top, which withereth afore it groweth up. We humbly intreat thy Favor and Protection; do Thou, Lord, undertake for us;
forch with our Fleets and Armies, and teach all our Soldiers to act the Part that becometh them; cover their Heads in the Day of Battle, gird them with strength of War, and, crown them with Victory and Songs of TriH
umph ; let them tread down our Enemies that they may not be able to rise any more against us; and be Thou, ó mighty God, the Sword of our Help and the Shield of our Excellency, and let thy right Hand, thine holy Arm, save and uphold us : that We, being armed with thy Defence, may be preserved evermore, from all Perils, to glorife Thee, who art the only Giver of all Victory through Jesus. Christ our Lord. Amen.
