War Services of General Officers of Royal Marine Forces.

! General Schomberg served with the Baltic expedition in 1855 (Medal), and commanded Marine Artillery of a Division of gunboats at the bombardment of Sweaborg (mentioned in despatches, and promoted to Brevet Major). Commanded the R. M. Artillery with the Brigade in China in 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river was in command of the Mortar Battery at the bombardment of Canton, and present at the assault and capture (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).

Lient. General Barnard served in the Royal Navy in Syria in 1840-41, including the blockade of Alexandria Turkish Medal, and Naval War Medal with one Clasp). Served as Lieutenant R. Marine Artillery on board H.M.S. Krebrand on the S. E. coast of America from 1844 to 1848; took part in the operations of the combined English and French Squadrons in the River Parana in 1846, including the action of Obligado, the landing storming and captare of batteries; subsequent operations on the River Parana, concluding with the action at St. Lorenzo, on which socasion he constructed a masked battery Rocket Battery on an island 800 yards from the enemy's guns, remaining concealed for two days and nights, and materially aiding the passing of batteries at St. Lorenzo by Men of War with large convoy of 120 merchant vessels on the 25th May 1846 (mentioned in despatches). Served on shore with R.M. Battalion at Monte Video when besieged by General Oreb, performing the duty of Acting Adjutant for 13 months. Proceeded to China in 1859 to take charge of R. M. Artillery serving on shore, and was senior Officer of the Corps in the Rocket Boats at the bombardment and capture of the Taku Forts on the 21st August 1865. Served as senior Officer in command of R. M. Artillery and R. Marines on board the Gun Boat Flotilla which procoded up the River Peiho two days after the capture of the Taku Forts and in advance of the Allied Armies. Took possession of the Tientsin Forts and afterwards of the principal gate of that city, being placed in command of the same till relieved by a force sent forward by the army. Appointed on 10th September 1860 to the command and charge of the Siege Train Flotilla. Employed in transporting the Siege Train from the Taku Forts to Tungchow, 16 miles from Pekin (services officially acknowledged). Appointed to the staff of the 2nd Division R. Artillery on 4th Oct. 1960 and served during the advance on Pekin and was senior Officer of Royal Marines at its surrender Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, and CB.).

General Suther served with the R.M. Battalion on the North Coast of Spain during the Carlist war. Has received the War Medal with Clasp as also the Turkish Medal for services on the Coast of Syria in 1840-41. ComLanded the Battalion in Japan in 1864-66, present at the attack and bombardment of the Forts of Simonosaki ty the combined Fleets; landed in command of Allied Brigades for the destruction of the five Forts and magazines the 6th September 1864. Commanded Brigade at the storming and capture of the enemy's stockade (menRoned in despatches, CB., Colonel, and Officer of the Legion of Honor). Has the Good Service Pension.

General Penrose served with the Royal Marine Battalion on the North Coast of Spain in 1838. Also in China In 1841-42 during the operations in the Yang-tse-Kiang. Landed on 24th Oct. 1856 for the protection of the British factory at Canton; commanded the Royal Marines at the storming of the breach in the wall of Canton on 29th October, and throughout the subsequent operations-mentioned in despatches (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served with the Battalion sent out for service in Japan in 1864-66, and was present at the bombardment of the batteries at the Straits of Simonosaki, the entrance of the inland sea of Japan, and commanded a Battalion of Royal Marines at the assault capture and destruction of the five batteries, stockade, magazines, and barracks, and during the shore operations, from the 5th to 8th Sept. 1864 (mentioned in despatches).

Lieut.General Rodney served in Spain during the Carlist war. Served with the R. M. Battalion at Eupatoria in 14, and with the Brigade in the Crimea as Aide de Camp and Brigade Major at the battle of Balaklava and during the siege and fall of Sebastopol; was also at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).

'Major General Williams was severely wounded at Lagos, Western Africa, 26th Dec. 1851, in spiking the guns to protect H.M. steamer Teazer, then aground.

Sir Charles W. Adair served in Syria in 1840 (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal), and was slightly wounded I the assault upon Gebail. Served before Sebastopol during its siege and fall, and with the R.M. Battalion at the cupation of Kertch and Yeni Kalé, as also at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Was present at the bombardment of the batteries at the Straits of Simonosaki, the trance of the inland sea of Japan, and commanded a Battalion of Royal Marines at the capture and destruction of the batteries, magazines, and barracks, and during the shore operations, from the 5th to the 8th Sept. 1864 azhtly wounded, and mentioned in despatches).

Major General M'Arthur served with the Expedition to the Baltic in 1855 (Medal).

Major General Pym served in the China expedition of 1858-60, including the blockade of the Canton river, the landing before, storm and capture of the city. In 1858 he served on the Staff of the Army as Captain Superintendent of the Canton Police Force (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).

Mayor General Gwyn served with the R.M. Brigade in the Crimea in 1855, and was also at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).

War Services.-Royal Marine Artillery.

Colonel Mawbey was in action with the forts of Bomarsund, roth Aug. 1854; and he commanded the Royal Marine Artillery in the Battalion during the operations against and surrender of the forts (Medal).

Colonel Cox was at the action with the batteries, and expulsion of the Russian garrison from Redoubt Kaleh, 19th May 1854, and varicusly employed on that coast; was the Senior Officer of R. M. Artillery at the attack by the Combined Fleets on the outer forts and works of Sebastopol on the 17th October, and employed in the blockading Furce during the siege, until March 1855 (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).

Colonel Brydges served with the Baltic expedition in 1854 and 1855, and commanded a Mortar in the flotilla during the bombardment of Sweaborg (Medal). Whilst serving in H.M. ship Ocean was landed in command of the Marines of the Fleet on several occasions during the Revolution in Japan in 1968, including the occupation of Kobé.

11 Sir Francis Festing served with the Baltic expedition in 1854 (Medal). Commanded a Mortar in the flotills employed against Sebastopol from June 1855 until its fall; and was also at the bombardment and surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal). Served with the China expedition of 1857-59 as Adjutant of the Artillery, including the blockade of the Canton river, bombardment and storm of the city (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served throughout the Ashanti war of 1873-74. Was selected to command the detachment of Marines sent to the Gold Coast in May 1873 to assist in repelling the Ashanti army at this time threatening Cape Coast and Elmina. Commanded the forces in two engagements at Elmina on the 13th June 1873, in both of which the enemy was defeated. On arrival of Sir Garnet Wolseley was placed in com. mand of the troops at Cape Coast and charged with the measures for the defence of the place. Was taken upon Sir Garnet Wolseley's list of special service officers on the 20th October and placed in command of the native camp at Dunquah and of the advanced posts. Commanded the force at the engagements near Dunquah on the "27th October (slightly wounded) and 3rd November, in the latter of which he was severely wounded while rescuing Lieut. Eardley Wilmot, of the Royal Artillery, who had fallen mortally wounded. Was afterwards placed in command of the camp at Prahsu. "The Queen was graciously pleased to command that Lt.Colonel F. W. Festing be specially promoted to the rank of Colonel in the army, for his distinguished services on the Gold Coast, dated 7th January 1874" (frequently mentioned in despatches, KCMG., CB.. Medal and Clasp).

12 Major M'Arthur was at the attack and destruction of the piratical stockades, &c. at Lagos, Western Africa, in Dec. 1851. Also at the bombardment of Odessa, 22nd April 1854; employed in making observations on the coast of Georgia, &c.; in action with the batteries, and expulsion of the Russian garrison from Redoubt Kaleh on 19th May; at the shelling of a Russian camp in the Bay of Katcha during the landing of the allied Armies on the 14th September; present at the combined attack on the outer forts and works of Sebastopol on 17th October, and with the blockading Fored before that town during the siege, until Dec. 1854 (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal. Served with the expedition up the Gambia, including the storm and capture of the strongly stockaded town of Saba on 21st February, and at the bombardment and destruction of the town of Porto Novo near Lagos, 25th April 1861. 15 Lt.Colonel Halliday served with the Baltic expedition in 1855, and in the flotilla of mortar-boats during the bombardment of Sweaborg (Medal).

19 Colonel Tuson served in China in 1858-60, and commanded a Detachment on an expedition against pirates from 26th Aug. to 5th Sept. 1858 (mentioned in despatches), and was present at the capture and destruction of junks and 236 guns. Was also present at the attack on the Peiho Fort on 25th June 1859, the capture of the Peiho Forts in 1860, and subsequent operations (Medal with Clasp).

23 Lt.Colonel Crease served with the China expedition of 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, bombardment and storming of the city (Medal with Clasp). Served with the expedition to the North in 1860, and. as Assistant Engineer at Shanghai. Served in the Ashanti war in 1873 and was present at the action of EssamaD (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, and Medal).

27 Major Welch was landed at Panama to assist in suppressing the rebellion on 27th Sept. 1860.

29 Lt.Colonel Ogle was landed from H.M.S. Brisk in command of a detachment of Royal Marines for the protection of Cape Coast Castle during the mutiny of the Gold Coast Artillery in October 1862, and received a vote of thanks from the Colonial Government. Served in China in H.M.S. Rodney from September 1867 to September 10691 commanded the Royal Marine Artillery of the Battalion of Royal Marines from the Squadron at the occupation of Yangchow in Nov. 1868; served with the Battalion at the attack and capture of three walled villages in January 1869 (mentioned in despatches).

34 Majors Derriman and Campbell, and Captains Bickford and Hill, served in the Ashanti war of 1873-74 (Medal). 35 Captain Cockcraft served in the New Zealand war of 1863-64, was in command of the Royal Marines at the capture of Rangiriri and action of Rangiawhia (Medal). Was landed on the Island of Tanna, New Hebrides, 12th Aug. 1565 in the operations against the natives.

36 Major A. Allen served in the Ashanti War in 1873, including the engagements at Elmina, and action at Essaman (mentioned in despatches, Medal).

38 Captain Cheetham proceeded to the Gold Coast with Colonel Festing's detachment of Marines in May 1873, and served in the Ashanti war till invalided in September (Medal).

39 Captain T. Moore served in the Ashanti War in 1873.

48 Quarter Master Thacker has received the New Zealand Medal, and that for Long Service and Good Conduct.

War Services.-Royal Marine Light Infantry.

Colonels Bennett and Blanckley served during the summer of 1855, blockading the Russian ports in the White Sea.

Colonel R. W. B. Hunt served with the R.M. Battalion in the operations against and surrender of the fortsa Bomarsund in Aug. 1854 (Medal). Served in the Black Sea from the latter part of 1855 to the declaration of peace 1o 1856 in command of a Detachment in a Floating Battery. Was attached as Colonel in Chief of the Militia a Volunteers to the Field Force employed in St. Thomas-in-the-East, Jamaica, during the negro rebellion of **** (mentioned in despatches, and received the thanks of the Privy and Legislative Councils, and of the Speaker a House of Assembly). Was detached from Jamaica in 1867 by the Governor in Chief to British Honduras on the Staff of the Lt. Governor of that colony for the organisation of the Militia with the rank of Colonel Commandant a that Force during the disturbances on the frontiers with the hostile Indians of Yucatan and Guatamala (mentionei in despatches, and Brevet of Major).

7 Colonel Maskery served in the Black Sea the latter part of 1855. Served as Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion on the China expedition of 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, operations before and capture of the city (Medal with Clasp).

Colonel Meade served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the R. M. Brigade, including the battle of Balaklava and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served on the Chana expedition of 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, operations before and capture of the city; after wards as Quarter Master of the 2nd Battalion. Served with the expedition to the north of China in 1860, include the action of Sinho, taking of Tangku, storm and capture of the North Taku Forts, and subsequent operations (Meria with three Clasps).

10 Colonel Thomas served with the R.M. Battalion at Eupatoria in 1854, and with the Brigade in the Crimes during the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and was also at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).

Colonel Cuthbert W. Burton while belonging to H.M.S. Winchester in Nov. 1854 was detached, by the special

order of the Commander in Chief, in command of Detachments of Royal Marines landed from the ships for the attack and destruction of a large piratical fleet and batteries in Kulan Bay, China (mentioned in despatches, and received the thanks of H.M. Government and the Lords of the Admiralty). Acted as Adjutant to the Royal Marines landing from the Fleet for the protection of the British factories at Canton, and in all the operations in the Canton river from Oct. 1856, including the assault on and entry into the city of Canton on the 29th Oct. (mentioned in despatches); at the attack and destruction of war junks and first taking of French Folly Fort on the 6th Nov. (officially thanked, and at the second taking and demolition of the same fort on 6th December. Adjutant of the Garrison Composed of seamen, marines, and the 59th Regt. at Fort Macao (the advanced position) and in all the attacks upon that for till June 1857. Present as Adjutant to the R. Marines at the battle of Fatshan on 1st June 1857 (mentioned in atches). Commanded North Wantong Island Fort from July to December. Adjutant of the Provisional Bat1 st the assault and capture of Canton on the 28th and 29th Dec. 1857 (mentioned in despatches) and the subent operations until the Battalion was broken up on the 30th Sept. 1858. Joined the 1st Battalion of the R. Marine Brigade and was attached to the Staff of the Army as Deputy Superintendent of the Military Police Force at Caston till Jan. 1859. Commanded a Company in the action with the Braves at Mong Kong on 4th January, and at the attack and capture of the bridge and village of Shecktsing on the 8th Jan. 1859. On quitting the China stating, received the thanks of the Commander in Chief for general services throughout the campaign (Medal with wo Clasps, and Brevet of Major).

Colonel Mairis served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the R.M. Brigade, including the battle of Balakaya and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served with the expedition to the Baltic until the declaration of peace in 1856. Served in China with the expeditionary force in 1858-59; also the campaign of 1860, including the action of Sinho, the taking of Tonghoo, storm and cap. tere of the North Takoo Fort (severely wounded in the left shoulder, and mentioned in despatches), and subsequent operations as Acting Quarter Master (Medal with two Clasps).

Lt.Colonel J. F. Sanders served with the R. M. Battalion at the bombardment and surrender of the forts of marsund in Aug. 1854. Served also with the Baltic expedition in 1855 (Medal). Served with the expedition to the Baltic until the declaration of peace in 1856.

Lt.Colonel Nurse served in the Baltic in July and Aug. 1854 (Medal); also with the combined Force before Sebastopol in 1854-55 until its fall; with the Battalion at the occupation of Kertch and advance ou Yeni Kalé, also at the bombardinent of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).

Colonel H. S. Jones served in the Baltic expedition in 1854 (Medal). Com panded the Brigade of Royal Marines the Egyptian war of 1882, and was present in the engagement at Tel-el-Mahuta, in the two actions at Kassasin, and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (twice mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp, 2nd Class of the Medjidie, and Aide de Camp to the Queen).

Lt.Colonel Le Grand served at the siege of Sebastopol from 1854 until its fall; was also at the capture of Kertch, and occupation of Yeni Kalé, and at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).

Lt.Colonel Graham served with the Baltic expeditions in 1854 and 1855, including the destruction of telegraph Bations on 20th June, and the shelling a large body of troops on 1st July (Medal).

Lt.Colonel Ozzard served with the R.M. Brigade in the Crimea in 1855, and with the combined Force before Sebastopol during the siege; also with the expedition to Kertch, advance on and occupation of Yeni Kalé; was in Aion with outer defences of Sebastopol on 17th June (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served on the tha expedition of 1857-59, and was at the destruction of war junks in Escape and Fatsham Creeks on 25th and 1th May and 15th June 1857, twice landed, attacked and defeated parties of Chinese soldiers; blockade of Canton ver, action with junks in the Macao Broadway, capture of Chuenpee Fort, capture of the batteries at Shektsing, and occupation of Canton. Also with the expedition to the north of China in 1860, and at Shanghai during the attacks of the rebel army in August, as Acting Adjutant and Qr.Master, part of the time served as Garrison Staff Officer (Medal with Clasp).

Lt.Colonel G. F. Blake served with the Baltic expedition in 1854 (Medal).

Lt.Colonel Barnes served in the operations in the Canton river in 1856-58; was in Macao Fort when attacked by junks on 4th January, at the destruction of war junks in Fatsham Creek, landed to destroy a village, storm capture of Canton (mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps).

Lt.Colonel Walsh served with the Baltic expedition of 1855 (Medal); and also with the Baltic expedition of 1956 until the declaration of peace.

Major Cairncross served with the Baltic expedition in 1855 (Medal).

Major Broughton served in the Crimea during the latter part of 1855 (Medal). Served on the China Expediof 1357-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, the landing before and capture of the city. With the expedition to the north of China in 1860, and as acting D.Á. Commissary General at Shanghai (Medal with Clasp). Major Holmes served with the Baltic expedition in 1855, including the destruction of a fort and shelling an campment on 23rd June, blowing up of Fort Svartholm and barracks on 4th July, destruction of the barracks at Lisa on 5th July, shelling a Cossack encampment and landing at Kounda Bay on the 11th July, destruction of a Cossack barracks, &c., on 12th July, action with a Russian steamer, gunboats, and a battery near Wiborg on 13th aly; also with the batteries on Fredericksham on 21st July, capture of the Island of Kolka, and destruction of miliy stores on 26th July, and bombardment of Sweaborg (Medal). Served also with the expedition to the Baltic until Ge declaration of peace in 1856.

Major A. H. Pascoe served with the Baltic expedition in 1855 (Medal). Served in command of a detachment Royal Marines on board H.M.S. Amethyst, under Admiral Grenfell, from July 1856 to December 1860, at the Tamas operations in the Canton river; was at the taking of Chuenpee, Wauchukee, Pakenhoe, and the action at Fat-ban.

Was also present at the capture and burning of the Tartar camp at the White Cloud Mountains, at the surprise and capture of the pirate stockade on the Singhi river, Malacca. During the Revolution in in 1859 he served at the blockade of Mazatlan, disembarked and occupied the outposts at the defence of Bax, and was present at the cutting out of two vessels from under the citadel. Received the repeated tanks of Admiral Grenfell for his conduct and that of the detachment under his command.

Major Allnutt served in China throughout the war of 1856-58, and was present at the capture of the forts blockade of the Canton river; landed for the protection of the factories, present at the storming of the Yamun the 25th October 1856 (mentioned in despatches), capture of the French Folly Fort and destruction of war junks 6th November 1856; occupation of Fort Macoa, the advanced position, during all the attacks on that post January to June 1857; action of Fatshan Creek, the bombardment and storming of Canton; expedition to the V bombardment and storming of the forts at the mouth of the Peiho river (Medal with three Clasps).
