War Services of the General Officers.

1 Lt. General J. A. Ewart served throughout the Eastern campaign from the first landing at Gallipoli in April 1854 until the final evacuation of the Crimea in June 1856; present with the 93rd Highlanders at the battle of Alma, and until after the occupation of Balaklava; appointed a D.A.Q.M. General 26th Sept. 1854, and as such was present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, and throughout the siege operations before Sebastopol up to 13th Feb.1855, when he rejoined the 93rd on promotion; accompanied the expedition to the Sea of Azoff, and was at the capture of Kertch and Yeinikali; afterwards present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and assaults on the 18th June and 8th Sept. (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Major and Lt. Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served in Bengal during the Indian mutiny; was at an engagement near Bunnee, and afterwards at the final relief of Lucknow; held for a short time a command consisting of three squadrons of Cavalry, 5 guns, and 500 Infantry (specially named in despatches, and appointed a CB.); and on the 16th Nov. commanded the leading party of stormers at the assault of the Secunderbagh, on which occasion he personally captured a colour, received two sabre wounds in an encounter with the two native officers who were defending it; was again (very severely) wounded by a cannon-shot (left arm carried away) when in action with the Gwalior rebels at Cawnpore on the 1st Dec. 1857 (Medal with Clasp, Aide de Camp to the Queen, and Colonel). Commanded the 93rd Highlanders for a short period during the siege of Sebastopol, was Lt. Colonel of the 78th Highlanders for upwards of five years. Lt.General Maitland served in the campaign of 1846-47 against the Kaffirs as Military Secretary to Sir Peregrine Maitland (Brevet of Major and Medal), and served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General to the 4th Division, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (dangerously wounded), and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). 5 Sir Charles Walker served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to the Earl of Lucan, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol; was also at the Cavalry affair the day previous to Alma; at the surprise of the Russian rear-guard at M'Kenzie's Farm; and served as a volunteer on board H.M.S. Bellerophon at the bombardment of Sebastopol on the 17th October (Medal with four Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in the field in India in 1859, first in command of a Field Force at Secrora in Oude, near which place he defeated the rebels on 27th April, and afterwards in command of the Column which accompanied Sir Hope Grant to the Nepaul Frontier, including the action of the Jerwah Pass (Medal). Served in China throughout the campaign of 1860 as Assistant Qr. Master General of Cavalry, and was present at the actions of the 12th August, 18th and 21st Sept., and in the advance on Pekin (CB., Medal with Clasps). Served in the cam. paign of 1866 in Bohemia and Moravia as British Military Commissioner at the Head Quarters of the Second Prussian Army under H.R.H. the Crown Prince, and was present at the battles of Nachod and Koniggratz (Medal). The 2nd Class of the Red Eagle with Swords offered to him by the King of Prussia he was prevented from accepting by existing regulations, but having received permission to accept and wear the 1866 Medal it was forwarded to him directly by the King of Prussia, accompanied by an autograph letter from His Majesty. Served throughout the Franco-German war in 1870-71, as British Military Commissioner at the Head Quarters of the 3rd German Army under H.R.II. the Crown Prince of Prussia, and was present at the battles of Weissemburg, Worth, and Sedan, and throughout the investment of Paris, and received the permission of Her Majesty to accept and wear the Iron Cross, and the Medal granted at the termination of the campaign.

Sir A. J. Herbert served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles in the Crimea and the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). 8 Lt.General the Honourable Leicester Smyth served in the Kaffir war of 1852-53 (Medal); also at the Battle of Berea. Served the Eastern Campaign of 1854-55 as Assistant Military Secretary to Lord Raglan, and afterwards to General Simpson (Medal with Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).

10 Lt. General Stephenson served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol and sortie on the 26th October. Was Military Secretary to the Commander in

the Crimea from early in July until Nov. 1855 (Medal with four Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 4th the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served as Assist. Adjutant General to the expeditionary force in China March 1857 to 14th Feb. 1860, and present at the capture of Canton in Dec. 1857; and served as Deputy at General to the force under Sir Hope Grant from 14th Feb. 1860 to 16th March 1861, present at the stormand capture of the Taku Forts, the actions of the 18th and 21st Sept., and subsequent advance on Pekin (CB., e of Colonel, Medal with three Clasps).

Edmund Whitmore served in the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to Sir George Brown, including ades of Alma (horse shot) and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Knight of the Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).

Led Alexander Russell served with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade in the Kaffir war of 1852-53 as D. A.Q.M.G. 21st Division, and was present at the battle of Berea-mentioned in General Orders (Medal, and Brevet of served also in the Crimea from the 11th July 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and comthe 1st Battalion from the 25th October 1855 until the evacuation of the Crimea (Medal with Clasp, Brevet Csel. Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).

Wolseley served with the 8oth Regiment in the Burmese war of 1852-53 (Medal for Pegu), was with the on under Sir John Cheape against the robber chief Myattoon, and was severely wounded when leading the party against the chief's stronghold on the 19th March mentioned in despatches). Landed in the Crimea The path Light Infantry on 5th Dec. 1854, and was employed in the trenches as Acting Engineer until Sebastopol ; was engaged in the assault and defence of the Quarries on 7th June, and on duty in the Trenches at the the 15th June; severely wounded in a sortie 30th August, when in charge of the advanced sap-several Tettoned in despatches (Medal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor. 5th Class of the Medijdie, and Medal). Served in the Indian campaigns of 1857-59, and was present at the relief of Lucknow, defence danbagh by Outram, with the several engagements there, siege and capture of Lucknow, subsequently as General to Grant's division and with it at the affair of Baree, action at Nawabgunge, and all the others **** that force (repeatedly mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, Medal with Clasp). Served in the war China upon the Quarter Master General's Staff, and was present at the assault of the Taku Forts, and in all ments throughout the campaign (Medal with two Clasps). Commanded the Expedition sent in 1870 from the Red River Territory for the suppression of the Rebel Government established at Fort Garry against authority, and was created a Knight of St. Michael and St. George for his services upon that occasion. or and Commander of the Forces on the Gold Coast during the Ashanti War of 1873-74 (received the both Houses of Parliament, promoted to be Major General for distinguished service in the field, GCMG. Medal with Clasp). Was sent to South Africa in June 1879 as Governor and Hign Commissioner of * lands adjacent, with local rank of General. Completed the subjugation of the Zulus and brought the & conclusion. Served in the Crimean campaign ts, including both assaults on the Redan on 18th June, in reserve, and 8th September, and siege and Commanded the Buffs from 3rd August till the 8th Sept., on which date he commanded the er party of the 2nd Division, furnished by his regiment, at the final assault on the Redanaded, mentioned in despatches. For his conspicuous and devoted bravery on this occasion he was Kis Regiment for, and received, the Victoria Cross (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, CB., on of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 2nd Division Feld Force during the campaign of 1878-79 in Afghanistan (mentioned in despatches, thanks of Parliament, KCB., and Medal).

Bright served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 19th Regiment, including the battles Ackerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and storming of the Redan on the 18th June and 8th Septemn despatches (Medal vith three Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Mie, and Turkish Medal). Commanded as Brigadier General the 1st Brigade Hazara Field Force y the expedition against the tribes on the Black Mountain (mentioned in despatches, thanked by of India, CB., Medal with Clasp).

Willis served uninterruptedly throughout the Eastern campaign from April 1854 to July 1856;— Begt. until May 1855, after which as D. A. Q.M. General at Head Quarters, and as A.Q.M. 1855 until its disbandment in May 1856 (Brevet of Major, Turkish Medal, and 4th Class of the Medjidie) Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the actions of the 20th 27th and 28th Nov. at Cawnpore under General Windham, battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec, and pursuit of the Gwalior Contingent to Serai Ghat action of Khodagunge and entry into Futtehghur, affair of Shumshabad, storm and capture of Meangunge, command of the left attack, siege and capture of Lucknow, and affair of Koorsie; commanded the 53rd through out the not weather campaign and passage of the Goomtee and occupation of Sultanpore, present with the Rog ment at the passage of the Gogra at Fyzabad on 25th Nov., action of Toolsepore, and minor affairs (mentione five times in despatches, Brevet of Lt. 34 Lord Chelmsford served with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea from the 31st May 1855, including the sieg and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of th Medjidie). Served with the 95th Regiment in the Indian campaign (Medal). Served in the Abyssinian campaig in 1868 as Deputy Adjutant General of the Expeditionary Force, and was present at the capture of Magdal (mentioned in despatches for "great ability and untiring energy,' CB., and Medal). Served in command of th British forces in the Kafir war of 1878, and in the Zulu war of 1879, being present at the engagements of Gingi dhlovu and Ulundi (Medal with Clasp, and GCB.).

36 Lieut. General W. H. Seymour served with the 68th Light Infantry during the Crimean campaign of 1854-55 including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, an Turkish Medal). Accompanied the 2nd Dragoon Guards to India, and served in the campaigns of 1858-59, including the action of Nusserutpore, siege and capture of Lucknow (charger wounded), and subsequent operations, act of Nawabgunge (in command of three squadrons of the Regiment), and reoccupation of Fyzabad. Commanded Regiment throughout the Oude campaign, including the action of Jamo (wounded), assault and capture of Birwah and Trans-Gogra affairs at Bungaon (Gazetted Brevet Major on 20th July 1858, frequently mentioned in despatche Medal with Clasp, and CB.).

37 Sir Archibald Alison served with the 72nd Highlanders the Eastern campaign of 1855, including the expedition to Kertch, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attack of the 18th June (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, and Turkis Medal). Served as Military Secretary to Lord Clyde in India during the campaign from August 1857 to March 18 and was severely wounded (lost left arm) at the relief of Lucknow (Brevet of Lt. Colonel, Medal with Clasp, and CA Was Brigadier General of the European Brigade and Second in Command throughout the Ashanti war from December 1873; led the Brigade at the battle of Amoaful, capture of Becqua, battle of Ordahsu, and captured Coomassie (thanks of Parliament, and KCB., Medal with Clasp). Served throughout the Egyptian war of 18 Commanded the troops in Egypt from the occupation of Alexandria until the arrival of Sir Garnet Wolseley, and formed the entrenched position at Ramleh, thereby effectually covering Alexandria and at the same tam threatening the enemy's position. Commanded the 3rd Brigade (the Highlanders) from the arrival of Sir Garne Wolseley to the end of the war, and was present in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, promoted Lieat. General for distinguished service in the field. Medal with Clasp, and 2nd Class of the Osmanieh). On the termination of the war he was appointed to the command of the British army of occupation in Egypt.

33 Sir Frederick FitzWygram served in the Crimea with the 6th Dragoons, was present at the battle of Tchernay and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).

40 Major General G. W. A. Higginson served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, as Adjutant 3rd Bat talion Grenadier Guards, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse killed), siege and fa'i f Sebastopol; after which he served as Brigade Major of the Guards until the conclusion of the war (Medal with four Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).

42 Major General R. Hume served the Eastern campaign of 1854, and up to the 13th Jan. 1855. and from the 29!! May to the 30th Sept. 1855, with the 55th Regt., including the battles of Alma and Inkerman (severely wounded) siege and fall of Sebastopol, repulse of the sortie of 26th October, and assaults of the Redan on the 18th June and 8th Sept.-severely wounded, and mentioned in despatches (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight o the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 55th Regiment in the Bhoo tan expedition, including the attack and recapture of Dewangiri in 1865 (Medal with Clasp).

Major General F. 50 Major General Lightfoot served as Brigade Major to the 5th Brigade at the second relief of Lucknow and at t defeat of the Gwalior rebels at Cawnpore, present at the passage of the Kala Nuddee, commanded the 84th Re at the Alumbagh, from the 23rd Jan. to the 10th March 1858; also at the capture of Lucknow, relief of Azimgh pursuit of Koer Sing, and all the operations in the Shahabad district, with those which ended in the ejection the rebels from the Jugdespore Jungles, until 7th Nov. 1858. 51 Sir Henry Hugh Clifford was at the battle of Boem Plaats in 1848, and served in the Kaffir war 1852-53 (Medal). He served by Vanter Master General (head of the department) in New Zealand from 1861 to 1867 and during the whole tions of the war of 1863-66, including the actions at Katikara and Koheroa, assault and capture of the tion of Rangiriri (CB), advance through and occupation of the Waikato country-with actions at Orakau. At the conclusion of the Waikato campaign Sir Duncan Cameron, commanding the Army Fed, in his despatch of the 4th March 1864 to the Secretary of State for War, after thanking individually of his Staff, including Colonel Gamble, adds:-"I beg more particularly to recommend Colonel Gamble, Varter Master General, to your Lordship's favourable notice, as to this Officer's ability, zeal, and unceasing this important duties, I am chiefly indebted for the success of these operations." He was also present net operations at Tauranga, and at the Gate Pah, and in the campaign of 1865 in the Wanganui ding the action at Nukumaru, affair of Kakaramea; and again in the campaign under Sir Trevor beault and capture of Otapawa, at Waikoko, and in the arduous forest march round Mount Egmont mentioned in despatches, rank of Colonel, and Medal). The 3rd Class of the Medjidie has been conferred the Viceroy of Egypt in acknowledgment of his services as Governor of His Highness' son, Prince tag his stay in England in 1868-69.

General Milman was present in the action at Marigunge and at the relief of Lucknow in Nov. 1857. Com.
