TRAVELS IN FRANCE.

THIS Tour was commenced soon after the Peace was signed in the year 1783; in consequence of my wife having had a paralytic seizure, and a change of climate having been strongly recommended by Dr. Heberden. His advice was strictly followed; and proved so far efficacious, that she had no material return of that complaint till she suddenly died of it, many years afterwards, in England. But we had likewise another strong inducement to undertake such a journey at this time, as, through the friendship of Sir John Irwine and Mr. Meynell, I had become connected with Marshal Biron, and his nephew, the Duc de Lauzun.

The fox-hunt in Leicestershire was then in its fullest glory, and I possessed the oldest coverts in that county. The Duke of York had hunted with Earl Spencer, and the Duke of Orleans with
