And in many of the Daily Devotions in other Books for the Week before, some necessary Points are omired, and the Divisions too unequal; and the Directions and Meditations at the Alcar, not to be used without lofs of ume, and a disturbance, by turning so often from the. Cornmon Prayer to that Book, and from that to the Com. mon-Prayer. Book: all which is herein amended, the very words,actions, and gestures at the Lord's Table being added, with proper Directions, Meditations, and Prayers all along, m their Cue places, and that in the fair, large character of the forst part of the Title page, and every Day's Exercise, both before and after, of an equal shortness, and all needful matter tully and plainly inserted, with th' addition of an Introduction, Appendix, and Kalendar, for our godly Deportment at all other times, to be alwaies in a readiness. All which, I hope, willincourage the general, constant, and devout Use of it.

ONE thing Premised, to be perused in the Closet, as well as read to the Family, till we get it so imprinted in our Minds that we never fail to Act accordingly. HEMEJPBER the Subbath Day,to keep it holy. Exod. 20.8.
Section 1. AS a boly Life is the belt Preparative to a happy Death: fo is it likewise to a Worthy and Comfortable Reception of these dread ful Mysteries. Which holy Life we can't atof keeping holy the Christian Sabbath, or Sunday, or the Lord's Day, as well as ordering our Conversation aright on other Days, as in th' Appendix. It is call'd the Sabbath-day, because We Relt from the Works of our ordinary Calling, and all other Worldly imployments, and Dedicate it to th’immediate Worship of God, whose Service is perfect Freedom; and 'twas callid Sunday by the Heathens, becaule they dedicated it to the Sun , and we may properly retain that Name, because Confea crated by Christians to th' Honor of our Savior, the fun of Righteousness, that arose [on this day) with healing in his wings. The Command. S. 2. ALMIGHTY God will have Himself worshipped both Dailyin a Secret manner by every particular Person in the Closet, and Privately by the whole family cogether; and also eveTy Seventh Day in a more Publick fort by all the Godly assema bled in a Visible Church, that by this Means He may be known,. not only to be the God and Lord of every fingle person, and
Family, but also of the whole Univerful World. Whatsoever Worthip God requires of any one alone; the fame He requires also of All mer together as One; being God of the Body, as a Church, as well as of any one Member, as a Christian. This was one of the Ten Commandments which Go' ipake with his own Mouth, and twice wrot with his owu Fı gers in Tables of Stone, to signify their Authoriry and Perpeiuity; and placed this Comnantment in the Miuit of the W. It wou'd make a man amazed to consider how oft, and with what zeal, and Protestations, and Promiles God requires Ail that wou'd be his people to fanctify the Sabbath; yea, how the God of Mercy threatens, and Merrilesy punishes the Breach thereof: to wit, of the seventh-day Sabbath, injoyn'din Memory of God's Resting from the Work of the Creation of the World, till Christ's Relurrection, (whereof we have many Instances in th' Old Testament ; ) and of this First-day's Sabbath ever since, appointed in Memorial of the Son of God's Rising from the dead, and thereby Complea• ting, and Ceasing from the work of the Redemption of the • World; of which Judgments whole Volumes pre written , but I shall here insert only Two, within 12 English miles of my Native Place. TIVERTON, in Devon, was often admonished by her Gudly Preacher that God wou'd bring some heavy Judgment on that Town for their horrible Profanation of the Lord's Day, occasion'd by their Market on the Day following; not long after his Death, on Monday the 3d. of April 1598, God consumed, by a sudden and dreadful Fire, the whole Town, except only the Church, the Court-house, and the Alms.houses, or a few poor People's dwellings: where were seen 400 Dwel. ling houles all at once on fire, and above so perfons perished in the Flame. And on Wednesday 5 August 1612, te whole Town was again Burot to ashes, excepi lume 30 houses of Poor people, with the School house, and Alms-bouses. But after
wards the Market-day was changed from Monday to Tuesday, to remove alloccasions of profaning the Lord's day. And haily any one came to the Gallows in England, but the Bieschofthe Sabbath occasioned his Ignorance, and was the firit caufie of his being misled into Evil courses, as many have there Confeis'd. Which may lufficiently seal unto them, whose hearts are not feat'd, how wrathtully Almighty God is difpleas'd with them who are wiltul Profaners of the Lord's Day. And I hear: ily wish that AMSTERDAM (forthe same reasons) may speedily a ter her Monday's Market; and also leave offturning the Sunday into a Sin-day, and thy Holy-into a Play day, is too may do, (the fight and hearing whereof his exceedingly griei'd me these 15 years, 2. S. Peter 2. 8.) : y crying about and tirung in the treets and Bosts with things to Sell, Opening Shops, Working , and Travelling hy water and by land, upon Business, and for Di. version on Sundays, and caking their Pleasure in Waggons, Sheases, Boars, Narre-fleas, Ice-lleas, and upon skaats'; and at Taverns, Coffee and Tipling houses, Bear-baitings, and other Plays; and Children Playing in the treets, swimming, &c; all this Before and After, and not feldom During the Church-times, Tho'not allow'd; and Men and Women at Night fingiug, Dancing, and Frolicking about the streets; and that All may, after the Publick, betake chemselves to their Private and Secret Devotions at home, giving God that Seventh part of their time, which He requires who gave them all they have, ( as in England is Injoyn’d and Observed, ) lest by Fire, or else by Water, The shou'd be destroy'd.
