20. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

ST. JOHN, VI.

2. Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3. And said unto him, Art | thou he that should come, or] do we look for another?

4. Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see :

5. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached to them.

6. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

7. And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

8. But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

9. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, And more than a prophet.

10. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

11. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of

Chap. VII. from P. 44.

18. And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

19. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another?

20. When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another?

21. And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

22. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the Gospel is preached.

23. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in

me.

24. And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John. What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25. But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings'

courts.

26. But what went ye out for to see? a prophet? yea I say unto you, And much more than a prophet.

27. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

28. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of

19. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

20. Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

21. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! Woe unto thee, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

ST. LUKE, VII. X. women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

See L. XVI. 16, P. 94,

29. And all the people that heard him and the publicans, justified God, being baptised with the baptism of John.

30. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptised of him.

31. And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation ? and to what are they like?

32. They are like unto children sitting in the market place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced We have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

33. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

34. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

35. But wisdom is justified of all her children.

Chap. X. from P. 57.

13. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! Woe unto thee, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

15. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

25. At that time Jesus an. swered and said,

I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28. Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and 1 will give you rest.

29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

1. There were present at that season some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

2. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things?

3. I tell you, nay; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

4. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem ?

5. I tell you, nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

6. He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

7. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold,

23. And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.

24. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

these three years I come seeking
fruit on this fig tree, and find
none: cut it down; why cum-
bereth it the ground?

8. And he answering said unto
him, Lord, let it alone this year
also, till I shall dig about it, and
dung it:

9. And if it bear fruit well: and if not then, after that, thou shalt cut it down.

10. And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

11. And behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

12. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

13. And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified

God.

14. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indig. nation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day: and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work in them therefore come and be healed; and not on the sabbath day.

15. The Lord then answered him and said, Thou hypocrite; doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

16. And ought not this woman being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo,these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

17. And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced, for all the glorious things that were done by him. Continued P. 69.

ST. MATTHEW, XII.

3. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did when he was an hungered, and they that were with him? 4. How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shew bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him; but only for the priests?

5. Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

6. But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

7. But if ye had known what this meaneth; I will have mercy, and not sacrifice; ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

8. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

9. And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue.

10. And behold there was a man which had his hand withered.

And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sab. bath days? That they might accuse him. (1)

11. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12. How much then is a man better than a sheep?

ST. MARK, III.

25. And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungered, he and they that were with him?

26. How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar, the high Priest, and did eat the shew bread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

27. And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.

28. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

CHAP. III. (from P. 46.)

1. And he entered again into the synagogue: and there was a man there which had a withered hand.

2. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.

ST. LUKE, VI. which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

3. And Jesus answering them, said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

4. How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shew bread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

5. And he said unto them that the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

6. And it came to pass also on another sabbath; that he entered into the synagogue and taught and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

7. And the Scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day : that they might find an accusa. tion against him.

L. XIV. 5, P. 129.

8. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose, and stood forth.

9. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to destroy it?

10. And looking round about upon them all

he said unto the man. Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so.

And his hand was restored whole as the other.
