ST. MATTHEW, XIX. ST. MARK, X. ST. LUKE, XVIII. ST. JOHN, XI. 21. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, If thou hadst been here my brother had not died. 22. But I know that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. 23. Jesus said unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. 24. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 27. She saith unto him, yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. 28. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly; saying, The Master is come and calleth for thee. 29. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came unto him. 30. Now Jesus was not yet come into the town; but was in that place where Martha met him. 31. The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her; saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. 32. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled : 34. And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, Come and see. 35. Jesus wept. 36. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 37. And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 38. Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39. Jesus said, Take ye away ST. MATTHEW, XIX. ST. MARK, X. ST. LUKE, XVIII. ST. JOHN, XI. the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he hath been dead four days. 40. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid; and Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me: 42. And I know that thou hearest me always; but because of the people which stand by I said it; that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43. And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. 45. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. 46. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. 47. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council; and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. 48. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. 49. And one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest * M. XXVI. 57.; L. III. 2. P. 13. that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all; 50. Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people; and that the whole nation perish not. 51. And this spake he not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation : 52. And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. 53. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. 54. Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; 20. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth: 21. Then Jesus, beholding him, loved him; and said unto him, One thing thou lackest; go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor; and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up thy cross, and follow me. 22. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23. ¶ And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God. 24. And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26. And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? 27. And Jesus, looking upon them, saith, With men it is impossible; but not with God; for with God all things are possible. kill; do not steal; do not bear false witness; honour thy father and thy mother; 21. And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. 22. Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor; and thou shalt have treasure in heaven : and come, follow me. 23. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful, for he was very rich. 24. And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25. For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26. And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? 27. And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. ST. MATTHEW, XX. 27. Then answered Peter, and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee: What shall we have therefore? 28. And Jesus said unto them, Verily, I say unto you, That ye which have followed me in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive [an hundred]* fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. 30. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. (1) 29. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake and the gospel's, 30. But he shall receive an hundred fold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. 31. MATTHEW, XX. 7. They say unto him, Because He saith no man hath hired us. unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the laborers, and give them their hire, begirning from the last unto the first. 9. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11. And when they received it, they murmured against the good man of the house; 12. Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong. Didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14. Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last even as unto thee. 15. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16. So the last shall be first, and the first last. [For many be called, but few chosen.]* ¶ 17.
