Young Lufty Whore-Mafters. So Dryden in a letter, 12 December, 1693,
to Walsh, speaking of Congreve's The Double-Dealer, writes:
"The
gentlemen are offended with him for the discovery of their folleyes;
and the way of their Intrigues, under the notion of Friendship to their
Ladyes Husbands."

grutch. Grudge. A frequent term. Cf. The Way of the World, IV, where
Sir Wilfull bawls out: "'Sheart an you grutch me your Liquor, make a
Bill." Also Crowne's The History of Charles the Eighth of France, pro-
duced early in December, 1671, being the first new play given at Dorset
Garden, V, where Isabella says:

No Millane,

Grutch not the love thy widow to him bears.

To the Duke of B. Parliament had been prorogued for fifteen months in November, 1675, and as soon as it met on 15 February, 1677, the Duke of Buckingham, quoting an obsolete statute of Edward III, raised the question whether the House was not dissolved. The King, who was naturally much incensed at this insolence, on the next day committed to the Tower, Buckingham together with his supporters, Shaftesbury, Wharton, and Salisbury. In the following July Buckingham was released on parole for a month, and presently, owing, as it is said, to the influence of Nell Gwyn, his enlargement was made permanent. Wycherley's sympathy is misdirected.

a Bawd, call'd J. C—. Jenny Cromwell, a notorious procuress of the
day. Cf. The epilogue to Lee's Gloriana, or the Court of Augustus Caesar,
produced at Drury Lane in January, 1675–6 (4to, 1676), spoken by
Joe Haines:

We'll deal with you, Gallants, in your own way,
And treat you like those Punks that love for pay;
Cartwright and I, dress'd like two thundring Whores,
With Rods will stand behind the Play-house Doors,
And firk ye up each Day to Pleasures duly,

As Jenny Cromwell does, or Betty Buly.

Betty Buly, "who began the Trade but newly," is mentioned in the extravaganza which burlesques Macbeth, and is printed as the Epilogue to Duffett's skit The Empress of Morocco, produced at Drury Lane in the spring of 1674. She lived in Durham Yard.
