ARABIC AND PERSIAN.

To perfons who wish to qualify theinfelves for fituations in the EAST INDIES, the following lift will be found very ufeful. It was given to one of my friends by the learned Mr. Langlès, Profeffor of Oriental Languages, Member of the National Inftitute, and Keeper of the National Library at Paris. His high reputation in this branch of learning renders it particularly valuable.

GREEK AND LATIN CLASSICS, &c.

In the following Lift are pointed out rather the most useful, than the most splendid or coftly editions. Such as will beft anfwer the purpofe of a Student are printed in Italics: the other editions mentioned deferve the attention of those who wish to make more particular researches into Claffical Criticifm, and Bibliography. The Editiones Principes, as the curious and valuable reprefentatives of Manufcripts, are particularly noticed; but I have corrected fome of the dates of Dr. Harwood, by the beautiful copies in the Bodleian Library. As Dr. H.'s work is now become fcarce, I have endeavoured to fupply its place, and to render my Lift more valuable, have noticed many recent editions. The quotations from the 4th Edition of Dr. H.'s View of the Claflics, are diftinguished by "inverted commas;" but I have not adopted any of his opinions, without the concurrence of thofe EMINENT SCHOLARS, both of Orford and Cambridge, who have given me important affiftance in this part of my Work. Mr. Dibdin's Introduction to the Knowledge of rare and valuable Editions of the Claffics, has been confulted, and notices of feveral articles have been taken from his elabo rate and useful publication.

1517.

- Opera cum Comment. Euftathii Romæ apud Bladun, 1550.---Cum Notis Clarkii & Ernefti, Lipf. 1759, 5 tom. 8vo. the best edition. It contains the Collation of a Leipfic Manufcript, and of all the earliest editions. If this edition cannot be procured, the Oxford edition, in 5 vol. 8vo. 1780, with the Hymns attributed to Homer, and the Judex of Seberus, is to be recommended. It contains the Minor Scholia.a Berglero, 2 tom. 12mo. Amft. 1707. A neat and convenient edition. Hymnus in Cererem, edente Ruhnkenio, 2d edit. 8vo. "The diction of this hymn is very beautiful, but is more polished and elaborate than the phrafeology of the Iliad and the Odyffey."Ilias ad veteris Cod. Venet. fidem recenfita. Scholia in eam antiquiffima edidit J. B. C. Villoifon Venet. fol. 1788. A most valuable treasure of critical learning is contained in these ancient Scholia. See Harles's Fabricius, tom. i. p. 422.-Homeri & Homeridarum Opera & reliquiæ, recenfuit F. A. Wolfius, 5 tom. 8vo. Halis Sax. 1794. Very great and judicious ufe has been made throughout this work of the Scholia, publifhed by Villoifon. In the Prolegomena, the external evidence relative to thefe moft eminent Works of Claffical Antiquity is fully examined, and a particular account is given of the ancient Critics, who have directed their attention to this fubject. Wolfius ftates his reafons for fuppofing that the works commonly attributed to the great Mæonian Bard, were in part only compofed by him; that the remainder were the productions of the Homeride, and other Poets, and that the whole were finally arranged and methodised in two Poems by Pifiitratus and his Family. The genuine lover of antiquity will doubtlefs examine all the evidence with the greatest circumfpection before he adopts the conclufions of this ingenious Editor.-The Grenville Homer, in 4 vol. 8vo. published at Oxford, affords a fpecimen of accurate typography. It contains the cellation of a valuable ancient Manufcript of the Odyffey in the British Mufeum, by Profeffor Porfon.-Ilias a Heyne, 8 tom. 8vo. Lips. 1802. Scholars complain of the inaccuracies of this elaborate edition, as well in the reprefentation of the various readings of the MSS. as in other respects.

HESIOD. B. C. 870.

Opera et Dies, et Theocriti Idyllia, Gr. 4to. abfque ulla nota, but fuppofed to have been printed Mediolani, 1493. Editio Princeps-Gr. fol. apud Aldum cum Theocrito, 1495. There are two impreflions of Theocritus, with Hefiod, &c. with the fame date, 1495. The more correct is that in which the Poem of the Syrinx is inclofed in a frame nearly in the
