STATESMAN'S YEAR-BOOK STATISTICAL AND HISTORICAL ANNUAL OF THE STATES OF THE CIVILISED WORLD FOR THE YEAR 1887 EDITED BY J. SCOTT KELTIE LIBRARIAN TO THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL PUBLICATION REVISED AFTER OFFICIAL RETURNS London MACMILLAN AND CO. AND NEW YORK 1887 24070. Man sagt oft: Zahlen regieren die Welt. Das aber ist gewiss, Zahlen zeigen wie sie regiert wird. GOETHE. PREFACE. THERE IS AGAIN, this year, a considerable increase in the size of the YEAR-BOOK. This is mainly due to the additional space which has been devoted to the smaller British Colonies. Detailed notices of these have been appended to Great Britain. It will also be found that much new information has been introduced on the various systems of land-tenure in India, and a new section of Agricultural Statistics added. While Upper Burmah has been incorporated in India, Corea has been detached from China and allotted a separate place. The results of the recent colonial enterprises of Germany and France, as well as of the new censuses of these two countries, have been embodied; and throughout it will be found that there are many important additions and modifications, while every effort has been made to bring the statistics up to the latest date. For the liberal assistance I have received from all quarters— from foreign representatives in England, from the Government officials both of our own and of foreign countries, from British representatives abroad, and from many private individuals-I beg to return my warmest acknowledgments.
