Also (contraction of all fo). As an adverb, it corresponds with so, and signifies thus, so, in this manner.

Ich mußte also (or so) handeln, I was obliged to act thus.

As a conjunction, it corresponds with folglich. It expresses a logical cause, and signifies consequently, accordingly, therefore, then.

The German also never signifies also in English.

Also, like folglich, implies an inference or a conclusion.

It is used, like then in English, when we merely wish to satisfy ourselves regarding the substance of what has just been said.

Sie haben mir es also versprochen? you have promised it me then?

Sie willigen also ein? you consent then?

It is sometimes used as an affirmation.
